Open9x, DSM, & MSRX Setup/Trouble shooting

Post by AAADiver »

Hi – I’ve spent many hours searching, reading, and testing but with little progress so could use some expert help. I just added a DSM2 module from a DSX5e to my TH9X running Open9x and I’m trying to use it with a MSRX. He trouble is I can’t seem to get the controls right largely because I’m a newbie at this I’m sure. The radio binds with receiver but things are not working right; controls don’t seem to be mapped right and are also very sluggish.
Here is my setup:

Radio Setup:
Model: FS-TH9X
OS: Open 9x-r 1641
EEPR: 212-0
RX Channel Order: TARE
Mode: 2

Model Setup:
Proto DSX2 DSMX
RXNum 00 RANGE (What’s this do?)
Heli Setup: All blank
Flt Phases Blank(Default)
DR/EXPO Blank(Default)
MIXER: CH1=Thr 100, Ch2=Ail 100, Ch3=Rud 100, Ch4=Ele 100
Limits Ch1 0-100 <- 100 (what’s the “<-“ mean? All others are 0-100

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated,
Allen

Channel order for Spektrum stuff is TAER, not TARE.
RxNum is used if you want to use the model match feature. RANGE - select that to enter range test mode.

The arrow on the limits screen simply shows you which one of the 2 fields you should edit to adjust throw on the side your stick is currently in.

Hey thanks Kilrah!
Still fairly unresponsive though. Does protol seem correct at DSX2 DSM? Any other recommendations on what to check?
Anyone else using same radio and heli with success?

Thx All!,

Hi Guys - It's gotten a bit better but not flyable yet.

When building, I used an available 1N4001 diode instead of the recommended 1N914 - BAD IDEA. Replace it and now controls are "almost flyable"...still just a slight delay.

Question: I havested the voltage regulator from the donor Spectrum radio. Given this, I assume I do not need the 1uF and 10uF capacitors shown in schedmatic and every image I've seen doesnt show these. Does anyone know if they are necessary??

Thx,
Allen

Yes, for a high power module with the linear regulator from the donor radio the caps are needed, it's exactly the scenario the schematic covers. You can also scavenge them from the radio (look the traces coming from and going to the regulator - they're the next thing you'll find).
If you use an UBEC then you don't need them (they're in the UBEC already).

Also, if you've done the 1k resistor mod to your radio you'd better undo that too, it's not required anymore and can cause trouble for DSM.

hmmm. Added caps but no apparent change, movement is delayed by apprximately 1/2 second and then jumps to postion....:-(
I do not have 1K resistor mod.

Any other ideas? Is the protocol correct at DSM2 / DSMX?

Thx all,
Allen

Hey guys -

OK, I seem to have solved the delay issue. Appears that the problem was actually with Open9x :-(. I moved to er9x and the control delay problems went away. :o

Thiss surprises me as I thought they were the same base code. Any ideas? Personally I preferred Open9x....

Thx,
Allen

I've been flying DSM things for 6 months with open9x without trouble... the problem must be somewhere else.

Did you try changing the protocol type, DSM2only and/or LP4?

Curious.

I have open9x with a dsm module working fine on my end!

Are you able to try some earlier open9x revisions? Quite possible a bug has crept in.

As your system exhibits the error; you will be the beat person to help us fix it!

Trust me guys, I'd rather fly Open9x :-) so reload Open9x and try again tomorrow with other frequency combos and will report results. I did fly today with er9x an all systems are go - flew great! Stay tuned for more results.

OK guy here are two videos; the first with er9x-r777 (working) and the second with Open9x-r1641 (non-work - note delays).

These are both the latest revs for each. Let me knwo what other Open9x rev you think I should try....

Did you try adjusting the protocol in open9x as Kilrah suggested?

I did. Tried all three available DSM protocols; all three binded but only DSM2 had servo movement but delayed , others had no servo movement.

My only other suggestion then is to start rolling back month by month on firmware revisions to try find one that works.. then narrow down to a specific release where it breaks!

Anyone else got a better idea?

AWESOME - open9x-r1664 works without the delays!

Trying later revs now to see where it breaks,

Cool! I guess the MSRX's receiver was a bit more picky than the others because there was indeed a problem, but that would go nearly unnoticed on those I used it with...

The hex I posted was custom-built for you from this morning's SVN with a fix I added. The fix has been committed, and r1670 is now released and available for download directly from companion9x, so that's what you should get! :)
