Multicopters ... motors/payload/stuff

Post by Ockert »

Guys

I am in love with the whole concept of quadcopters and FPV. I am dreaming of a building something that would initially give me the ability to take some good video and pictures.

My approach has never been to buy a kit and build it. Rather, I am trying to get a feel for what size motors and props I need for lifting (with ease) the following items and will then build the frame around it.
(estimates in brackets)
1. Motors(x4) + ESC(x4) + frame + electronics (400g + 300g + 800g + 400g ~= 1.5kg)
2. 5000mAh 3S (x2) (410g + 410g)
3. Camera + FPV + telemtery gear (???)

I expect the total weight will probably be around 3.5kg all inc?

Can someone please give me advice on
1. Wattage per weight
2. Suggestions for motor and prop size.
3. Realistic flight times to expect.
4. Suggestions in general.

I have looked at http://www.ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc_e.htm?ecalc which should help me put all this together, but to be honest I play around with the numbers but I think there is still a base amount of knowledge needed to really use it properly.

Thanks
Ockert

I'm building one now.

200watts per 454grams or 1lbs.

You select the motors that suit your needs. I went with 30amp ecs, 2830. @ 1000rpm should give me up to 3lbs of thrust per motor with a 4s , 10-15 mins flight time hopefully.

The brain is important, a kk controller is cheapest, arduino is the best, depending on your budget.

Right now, all i am missing is a frame, and i've spent about $130 so far for everything, cept a frame, and i'll probably build it from scratch. I have two controller boards, one for the quad and one to vontrol the stabilizatiin of my camera gear.

The fpv stuff is cheap too.

That sounds great and just about where I would like to go with this one.

Which motors you using that can handle 4S at that size, or are you planning on governing it?
Also, what size pack are you using to give you 10-15mins?

PLEASE keep me posted on your progress.

I mention 10-15min hopefully with a 4s. ZIPPY Compact 5800mAh are the packs I will be using. Possibly 2.

8-)

It';s going to be fun..

I think multiwii already can handle the camera stabilization.. you don't need another controler

Supposidly I'll get 25mins (ish) hover time / flight time @70% efficiency with my intended setup.

9x5 and i have 10x4.5 or was it 9x4.5 and 10x5... So many numbers... :D

9x5 are optimum for the motor i chose ( that i figured by reading too many quad copter builds and noob pages)
