I don't really like the 32K eeprom in it That is one of the reasons I never got a taranis.
many of us don't just want to scratch build, we want to mod our 9x radios, which as far as I understand it is still being produced and sold. It is a hobby inside another hobby. This is how all started
As far as I know, by modding my 9x radios with the upgrade boards and using Ersky9x, I still have many more hardware capabilities than if I modded a QX7.

The problem is that there are no upgrade boards at the moment.. There are people still waiting for the ArUni and Ar9x to be produced again. I gotta say, I would love to see them back on the market.

Actually, the QX7 has a place on the board for a larger EEPROM/Flash device. The layout matches the device used on the SKY/AR9X/9Xtreme boards, so the 32K EEPROM can be sorted for scratch builds, or quite possibly to use the QX7 board as a mod board for a 9X.
The layout shows a 32Mbyte device, we use a 512Kbyte (1Mbyte on 9Xtreme) device!

I have a spare 512Kbyte device so I could actually try it out!

I also agree there is no reason to use an AVR chip in a new board, the ARM processors are MUCH more capable.

With the FrSky QX7 available at a very reasonable price, I'm not sure the effort in designing a new board is worthwhile or cost effective. If you want to scratch build a radio, then probably obtain the QX7 mainboard as a spare part, together with the display may be a good option.

Whoops!!! That's right my mistake. Also I didn't realize how old these chips were. The Frsky QX7 is something to consider. Thanks everyone for all the comments.

I would love to get my hands on one of those boards as well for my 9x.

I might have an ARUni to sell. Had bought all the parts to make myself a small form factor radio, but once again I lagged so much that with the FrSky X-Lite there is now something much better than what I'd have made that's ready to use.

I've used X7s to make custom radios for a customer as well, nice parts to reuse.

Mike, good news about the eeprom on the X7.
what about extra pins? On my 9x radios with upgrade boards I have 4 pusbuttons at the back, 1 slider on the throttle side..
Also what about the SBUS input at the trainer to install a small low power DIY frsky compatible receiver for trainer?

Anyway, I can't afford to buy a QX7 radio at the moment and I don't really need a 6th or 7th radio but I have a 9x here with a skyboard that could be replaced with one of those boards.. Depends how expensive they are..

The X7 already has two spare switch inputs available on 2-pin connectors, and I've re-purposed two of the LED signals (LEDs in the power switch) as extra analog inputs. While not currently implemented in the firmware, it is possible to use an analog input as 3 digital inputs (we do this on the 9Xtreme).

SBUS trainer input is already implemented, either from the XJT heartbeat signal, or from the trainer jack.

Looking at UK prices, the X7 is £100.80, while the main board is £60. I'm actually not sure the main board is cost effective unless you just want it to update some other Tx.

yeah, the prices the Ar9x and ArUni sold are unbeatable I which they were back on the market.. And I would rather buy one of those than the X7.
I have two and they are great.. Shame really

I just bough the QX7S
I am really enjoying it... the only mod i had to do was add a power charging port.. the rest is in the radio.
I took it a step further and added a temp sensor in the radio on the battery and incorporated it on the 4 prong din plug.

Now i am really set for NiMH charging.

I really need to stop tinkering and start flying...

my .02 cents.

and if you used ersky9x you could add some more switches, and i think at least one slider.. Not sure about this one

that is true.. when i took it apart, i noticed the two connectors... i looked them up and saw a post by Mike on making them 2POS Switches or Sliders, etc... I purposely went to this radio over the other Taranis Brothers for simplicity... it is big and fat, but so is its owner.

Horus was too much, X9E had sliders which i would never use and the X9D also had the sliders and just didn't appeal to me anymore as I had one previously.

Oh, well... I have one Custom 9x Project Radio and the QX7S.
When I am done with these, i can't believe i will say this.. but will buy a DJI Mavic 2 and get rid of all the DIY Stuff.
