ArduVoice-9x Voice Module with Arduino for the 9x Radio

er9x is the best known firmware. It has a superb range of features and is well supported by the community. Well worth trying out.

I like the model backup feature as well.
I tried it on the radio I just finished and it worked flawlessly.
I will have to take a photo of where I mounted the FTDI adapter and post it later on. I am going to mount it in the same place on my 2 other radios.

2 more switches hmmm - I don't need them at the moment.

Ok, I have the second ArduVoice board installed and working in my TH9X Atmega64 chip.
I have to look at the volume control as it is not going up or down but it is working.

Just a note:
I have found that using the 2 board design fits nicer in the radio.
I have one more Arduvoice board to install. It's a single board design but I may separate them depending on how it fits in the radio.

hi guys,

just for clarification, "beeper" is it for buzzer?do i need to cut the traces for atmega pin5 and reconnect the buzzer to "beeper" pin, or just leave the buzzer as it is and no need to modify?

then also what is the purpose of "EXT1" and "EXT2"?

thanks

Remove the buzzer and the transistor next to it. Then tap the signal from the buzzer at one of the legs of the transistor you removed and connect it to the ArduVoice board.
then also what is the purpose of "EXT1" and "EXT2"?
Those are pins that can be used for extra switches or pushbuttons.. I for example, added two pushbuttons on the back of my radio

Most of the Arduino proMini I buy have the bootloader already installed so I'm assuming the ones you used do not?

Also, model of my 9x is the DSS motherboard according to Hobbyking, so will this mod work on this model?

Hi, welcome to the forum :) The reason I have pointed you to the forum is because you will get much better help here, and also all the info is here.
For your bootloader question, please read the first post. It explains how to flash the arduino with a new bootloader and also the firmware.

About your other question, I do not have one of the new 9x radio's but I do believe the only difference might be the RF module only. You would have to flash to the Open Source "Er9x" firmware (www.er9x.com) for this voice module to work, as the original 9x firmware does not support it.

Please read the first post of this thread carefully and then feel free to ask more questions :)
Have fun..

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Already have the ER9x-r820 installed on the 9x.
I also thought the only differences would be the module but according to Hobbyking where they have 2 different boards and they say one is not compatible with the other.

Anyhow, no problem, i will do some more reading as you suggested.

So is the bootloader you mentioned, different from the bootloader already installed on the promini arduino I buy?

Yes it is.. Mike wrote it.

Understood on the bootloader.

Took a couple of pics of the motherboard on the 9x.
Extra wiring is to the socket for external USBasp programmer.
Micro number is ATMEL ... Atmega64A ....AU1242

On reading some parts I see reference to entering bootloader on the radio with trims etc. but this radio doesn't seem to like it.
The top of the LCD reads some rubbish on the top line but that's all. Guessing something is not compatible.
Works on a 9XR Pro I have though.

The motherboard seem to be the same as always.... it has the m64 chip which has a few limitations as it doesn't have much flash and eeprom space..
The 9XR-PRO has completely different hardware.
This m64 chip doesn't have enough space for a bootloader and er9x. The bootloader I mentioned is for the arduino voice module..
You know that if you want to build this voice module, you will also have to do some mods on the radio, right??

Yes, aware some changes required.

So are you saying with the m64 that since not enough room for bootloader and er9x that er9x has to go and reflash original firmware to use the voice mod?

I had considered changing the motherboard as they are cheap @$15 Aus and I imagine they would have the m128 micro but contacting Hobbyking they say they will not work in the older Tx. Asked why, they said because it says so in the web page.
I did see that but still asked why and basically they said they didn't know so ....mmmm ...someone telling porkies maybe. :)

Anyhow, I'll do some more reading and decide from there.
Thanks again ...Jorgo

No, not at all, there is a special version of Er9x on m64 that supports this serial voice module. What I said is that due to the low capacity of the m64 chip, it can't have as many features in general as for example a board with an m128..
There is a special version for the m64 with the voice module support exactly because of the low memory. On the other chips you can select between serial or no serial (megasound) voice modules..

I can't see why it wouldn't work, but I could be wrong of course..

bluejets what exactly are you looking to accomplish?
I just built Joao's soundcard, installed and now have working Voice in my TH9X with an Atmega64 in it.
I flashed the 64bit 9x serial version Firmware to it.
You will not see the serial option in the hidden hardware menu as it is just toggled on assuming you have it all wired.
I think Mike told me this a few months back. It was done to save memory.

I thought about changing the motherboard to the 128 chip as they are like $9.99 on HK or even replace the chip but decided against it as I figured time and money spent would be better put to buying a newer remote anyway.

pro mini 168 will not work as per adviced here last time by mike.

did simple test in breadboard, what i noticed before doing everthing is to check if the sd card module can communicate with arduino pro mini by using the example codes for arduino SD.

just want to know if using usbasp to flash bootloader and then afterwards upload the hex firmware, will the bootloader will also be erase after i upload the firmware?

then what are the things that need to configure in the radio setup to activate the voice, do i need to use pispkvoice or other setup?

thanks

Hi Guys, I just got my first TX radio the turnigy 9x and I'm thinking of doing all the modes out there. What are my options regarding voice output?
Any link to an ongoing project would be great.

There are no ongoing projects. The best one is the one described on the first post of this thread.. You will need to flash your radio with Er9x for It to work though..
First thing, please check which processor your radio has.. Most ship with the Atmega64, but some come with the Atmega128 chip..

i'm guessing that it will work with both processors but with a different version of Er9x, correct ? Is there a place that has all the files for download depending on the processor version ?.

Is there anyway to test the finished arduvoice before installing/connecting it to the radio?
Also what is the FTDI board for? I have an ISP programmer, do I also need the FTDI board ?

The FTDI can be used to program the module, and also to transfer models from / to the SD Card. You can also upload new voice files with it.

One more maybe silly question. I was reading on how to burn the firmware into the module and it says that the two horizontal trims should be held towards the centre. Are these the small buttons under the gimbals that are used to trim the gimbals during flight ?
