[PROBLEMO] Er9x Will not boot / past splash ! wtf

er9x is the best known firmware. It has a superb range of features and is well supported by the community. Well worth trying out.

[PROBLEMO] Er9x Will not boot / past splash ! wtf

Post by Charlie86 »

So I have used Er9x successfully for the last few months now and love it,

Just the other day, I charged the Turnigy 2.65 1C transmitter pack and ever since then the TX (Er9x) will not startup or get past the "loading model .." screen ; /

Although I have been able to flash the EEPROM using EEpe ..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynv8ORGDzxI

Anyway the transmitter will not startup_

Someone told me this issue could be related to one of the programming connections resulting in one of the buttons being stuck ON -

- This is bizarre because I made extra sure there would be no loose ends by securing all the wires with a hot glue gun : http://imgur.com/LMTcQBK

Someone help me solve this
please!

Cheers

Use eepe to read the EEPROM.
Now in eepe, create models in any empty slots from 1 to 6.
Write this back to the EEPROM.
Now power the Tx on, if any of the 6 buttons are being detected as pressed, then one of these models will be loaded at startup, which one will tell us which, if any, buttons seem stuck on.

Thanks Mike,

So I updated and flashed with rev.812, and now I got the message: "check mix/DR sources"

Before this I was getting ; "Bad EepROM data " or something similar

I am still completely baffled as to why this is happening ..

That is expected ("check mix/DR sources") as you have flashed the latest version that has done an auto-update of the model EEPROM.
It is, however, hiding what we wanted to see.

Solution:
Read the EEPROM into eepe, and for each of the first 6 models, edit them, go to the setup tab and near the bottom you will find a button labelled "Update to version 2, only for er9x r840 and later". Click on this button and the model version number that was 0 will change to 2. Note: One of the models may not have the button visible as it was updated by the firmware.
Now write the EEPROM back to the radio and power the Tx on again.

We hope to see " LOADING MODEL01", or some other model, come up.

I followed those steps and now getting

LOADING MODEL 1

Progress ?

This is the "quick select" feature. MODEL 1 is loaded if you have the MENU button pressed at power on. The loading message stays until the MENU button is released.

I conclude your MENU button is stuck ON.

The MENU button connects to pin 11 of the processor (the one middle right at the bottom of the processor). This pin is also used by the programmer as SCK while programming.

The switch for the MENU button may have failed.

You need to open the Tx up and check the menu button operation. measure the resistance between the two pins shown below with the button not pressed and pressed:

Tx switched OFF.
With the button NOT pressed you expect an open cirguit, with the button pressed, you expect a short circuit.

With the Tx ON, you can measure voltages across those two pins, button NOT pressed, you expect around 5 volts, button pressed you expect 0 volts.

Using my VC265 I cannot get anything except 0 or -0 values when I test any of the button connection points

When I connect to a AA battery I get 1.6 V so it can't be the Voltage meter ; /

My conclusion is the switch has failed as a short circuit. You could try measuring the voltage on the pad to which the programmer is connected beside pin 11 of the processor (Tx power on, pin 1 is on the bottom left corner of the processor). There is an internal pull up resistor of 20K to 50K, and a 200 ohm resistor between the pad and the MENU button switch.
I would expect about 0.03 volts on that pad if the switch is shorting to ground.

Ok so I tested the same connections with the TX switched ON, all the button points are getting a 5.0 V reading except the MENU button!

I have some spares lying around should I just swap out the faulty button out or something else ?

cheers

I should just swap out the button.

Suggestion (ignore if you know this already): Cut the existing button out, leaving the 4 legs still soldered in the board. Maybe cut three of the legs in fact, as close to the switch body as possible, then desolder the fourth leg using the switch body to pull the leg (gently) from the board. Now desolder each of the other three legs, using either tweezers, or long nose pliers to (again gently) pull the leg from the board. Hopefully the 4 holes will now be clear enough to push the replacement switch through.

Before adding the replacement switch, it is worth checking that the MENU signal is not shorted anymore.

Ok I didnt really know that so thanks for the tip, could you please mention the model name of the switch, not sure I have the same thing here

Fingers crossed !

I don't know it, sorry. Skynorth should be able to help, he used them on the SKY replacement board.

I think this is the same switch:
SCHURTER - 1301.9306
Farnell (element14) and Digikey(au) both seem to have them, put the above line in to google.

Ok so I replaced the 'faulty' switch and I am still getting a low reading on the multimeter from the MENU switch and still LOADING MODEL 1 ..

any other ideas ?

With the power off, measure the resistance across the switch. We are looking for one of:
open circuit
short circuit
around 200 ohms

did you measure for shorts before you soldered the new switch?
It sounds like there might be a short to ground somewhere...

Short circuit form the pad that goes to the processor and ground. But it doesn't matter now.. we can see that you might have short circuit between ground and menu somewhere. Can you measure the resistance between the menu pin on the processor and ground? Radio powered off..

Original 9x schematics. You can see switches and CPU pin #.
Good time to practice schematic reading if you're going to do your own mods and troubleshooting.

Another schematic close enough to the m64 9x board for the Grunin board.
