Will OpenTx display sbus telemetry with 9x radio LCD?

openTx has introduced a range of new features, ideas and bling. It is fast becoming the firmware of choice for many users. openTx will run on ALL current hardware platforms, including the gruvin9x and sky9x boards. Work has already started to support the new FrSky X9D radio!

Will OpenTx display sbus telemetry with 9x radio LCD?

Post by interestingfellow »

I've looked and keep finding only older posts. I'm hoping someone here will brighten my day with an unexpected "yes, it will work"

Very simple question: I keep seeing that a 9x radio+OpenTx+XJT module will not properly display telemetry data on the 9x lcd.

Is this the case?
I know a co pilot display will do it, but I want it on my 9x display.

Thanks!

Smart port telemetry support (I imagine SBUS is a mixup) has unfortunately never been added for the 9x in OpenTX. All OpenTX developers having moved away from the 9x before that appeared nobody got interested in doing the work. Still possible of course, but would likely take someone with interest to join the project and add support.

If you really need the smart port telemetry, I believe Er9x supports it.

The 9X does need a hadware mod (inverter and two signals moved to other pins) to receive telemetry from either a DJT or a XJT.
Er9x firmware does support handling and displaying SPort telemetry data.

WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!

I see there is a mega2561 build for ER9X. I assume this can be flashed to a diy 2560? same schematics as the OpenTx DIY 2560?

Am I right?

The 2 chips are significantly different even if their names aren't... don't think it will port straight.

I don't know specifically. The build of er9x works on a 9X with the '64 replaced by a '2561, so is only using the 64 pins of the '2561 and these are connected to the same functions therefore.
I think the openTx build matches the "Gruvin" board and uses a different connection layout.
If you use the same connections as used on the 9X, then the er9x-2561 build should work.

Bear with me, please:

The 2560 and 2561 are not "compatible" for this application? What is the important difference?
****EDIT* The pinouts are different and obviously programming would not interact as programmed for the other chip.***

I have since started found the 9x clone thread
and will do lots of reading before I build my own TX, I'm sure.

Thanks VERY MUCH for the info, ya'll!

****EDUT2** I'm going to start a new thread elsewhere to pursue my own 9x clone with a 2561 (or other compatible chip) so I can use XJT telemetry, but only after a lot more reading.****

Look at the AR9X and ARUni boards, you've got all the goodies of ARM radios completely integrated and with full support for jsut $30. No point bothering with anything else nowadays unless you actually want to figure out everything for the fun of it.

Thank you, but this is more of a pet project/desire/learning experience. I already have a 9x capable of running ER9x and supporting the XJT telemetry.

I just wanna build a badass radio to show off, I guess..... posterity, that sort of thing.

I do appreciate all the info, comments, and advice!

Let's pretend I'm going to build a radio based on a 9x processor.

Which ER9X image will support XJT telemetry and voice?

Thanks, again!

I would say all of them.
But if you really want a badass radio to show off it's features, then you need one like mine :) with Ersky9x of course :)
Get an Ar9x board and start loading hardware on it :)

Dude, that is sick! I have a few questions, though:

what is the real time clock for?
er9x for the ar9x has programming for extra buttons built in? is it setup/selected in the 9x, or in the firmware before you flash?
what are the 4 buttons on the back for (what do *you use them for)?
Does internal module transmit when you have external module installed?

I wanted to build my own radio for 2 reasons; to learn about the guts of a radio and everything that goes into it, and also to make a case that was the size I wanted and laid out how I wanted. I love opentx, but I think my needs/desires have changed...I might trick out my 9x as my main radio and still build extra(s) transmitters!

Damnit. this Rc hobby thing is an endless rabbit hole of new toys! ;D

You can log several parameters from your flights on the SD Card. Stuff like telemetry values, etc. For that you need an RTC that provides time and date.

I also use it as an A.D.T. (Anti Divorce Tool) I Just set an alarm telling me that is time to pack my stuff and go home

It is all configured in the Ersky9x "Radio Setup / Hardware" menu. This menu is protected so stuff doesn't get changed by accident.
what are the 4 buttons on the back for (what do *you use them for)?
You can use them for may things, just like a normal switch for example. Just configure a Logical switch as a Flip-Flop, and when you press them once, the Logical switch turns ON, press it again, and the logical switch turns OFF. Use the logical switch to control a mix. You can control stuff like lights, etc...
I use them mostly to play voice messages, when I want to know the plane's battery voltage for example, or want to reset the timer, stuff like that.
Does internal module transmit when you have external module installed?
Well, this depends on whether you built the circuit to control the power to both modules, please see here:

http://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=8471

Ersky9x can turn the pulses to both internal and external modules OFF. The circuit linked above detects this and turns the power to the respective module OFF. As soon as you select a protocol, Ersky9x starts sending a signal to the module, the circuit detects the signal and turns the Power ON.

If you don't have this circuit, both modules will be powered when the radio is turned ON, and therefore transmitting..

If you want to build your own case/radio, you might like to have a look at this board then. It is basically the same as the Ar9x but designed to revive old radios and also for projects like the one you've just described.

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthr ... rsal-board

All the above applies to this board as well..
Damnit. this Rc hobby thing is an endless rabbit hole of new toys! ;D
You tell me

João

EDIT: Both boards run OpenTX as well. But I think it doesn't allow for any extra hardware apart from what a 9x radio has.

Jsha, can I add bluetooth to atmega64 for er9x? I found a couple threads where it was discussed (including you), but never saw where a how to.

I know AR9x will do it.

I don't think it supported on boards with Atmega processors. At least not the way we use it. Trainer, etc..

People have been putting BT modules in them back then but it was for example connected straight to the RF module to relay the telemetry, i.e. not actually involving the radio at all.

Or you could upgrade your radio with an Ar9x board. They are cheap and good.. :)
I have a couple.

Check ar9x.net if you want to have a look.

I'm sold on the idea of the AR9x, at this point it's a matter of budget and time. Soon...

I keep asking about m64/m128 chips because I have a walkera donor tx that I'm going to convert with an m64, and then maybe build a teeny tiny one for fun, just because I have the parts. I really want to learn programming and hardware, hence all the screwing around.

I was hoping the m64 could bluetooth trainer to the converted Walkera with m64, but whatever. A cable isn't going to kill me.

Thanks, again!

Jhsa:
why would I want LCD extension with AR9x?
Original 9x LCD/backlight works with new board?
What is "programing S-port device from transmitter"? Where is the S-port device located (Tx module? rx?)?

Thx! TTYS!

The Ar9x board (Not the ArUni) is a direct replacement of the 9x board. That means it will work with the 9x LCD without any extension.
The extension is used if mounting the board in another different cases.

The update S.Port function in Ersky9x allows you to program the Frsky XJT module and X series receivers with new firmware.
There are other hardware updates you can do with Ersky9x using the radio..

Debating on upgrading my 9x with AR9x and M9's OR scratch building a radio case like this one with an UNI and M9's https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpos ... stcount=15

that way, I would have the 9x with dsm and also custom with xjt...

I ordered the AR9x and a couple M9's for my 9x.
Adding rtc, encoder nav pad, a couple extra buttons, another 3 way switch, and want to do custom paint and grips.

We'll see how far I get...

What firmware are you using?
This is an openTX thread, but as far as I know openTX at this moment does not support any extra switches and buttons on the Ar9x board. And I don't know if it ever will, as it looks lime there is not much interest from the developers on this board. :(
