dsm2/dsmx protocol

Sorry if this is a really dumb question. What is it for? I have a 9xr and orangerx dsm2/x module. what does the dsm2 dsmx protocol do in settings?

It's there for "hack" modules taken out of genuine Spektrum radios. With the Orange you want PPM.
