I cautiously backed up everything. Downloaded and flashed the new Tx firmware performing the check hardware compatibility.
When the USB cable was removed the Exit function refused to Exit.
Switched off, switching on - completely dead.
Switching into USB mode worked and allowed me to restore backups.
Switching On now works, with throttle warning, splash screen and welcome sound-track then the screen just pulses and clicks.
Reloaded backed up firmware and models multiple times.
Tried reformatting and repopulating SD card.
Removed main battery and back-up watch battery.
No change - Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Looks like you happen to have a hardware problem that crept up simultaneously.
Make sure the battery is charged though...

Re: OpenTx 2.2.2 firmware bricked original Taranis X9D - EDITED
Battery fully charged externally.
Reloaded firmware and models - no change.
The Taranis X9D was delivered 17/06/2013 and is the "A" model
Battery, sliders and power switch were upgraded years ago.
If I put the switches on the default model in the wrong positions I get the warning screen that responds to the switches being altered. Then it reverts to the "ticking pulsing splash screen" It appears that the problem occurs on the next stage of initialisation.
I noticed that the boot-loader is V1 and wondered if that may be a problem.
I copied the 2.2.1 firmware to the SD card and wrote it from there with the Taranis.
Thankfully every thing is now back to normal.
Have since used the DFU utility to re-write both 2.2.1 boot-loader and firmware - seems good

Re: OpenTx 2.2.2 firmware bricked original Taranis 9D - Solved
Having got a clean install of Companion 2.2.2 and updated the boot-loader on the Taranis 2.2.1 the installation of the 2.2.2 firmware and boot loader using the DFU utility went smoothly without issue.
I conclude that attempting to upgrade the firmware on the Taranis without using the DFU utility or the SD card and your existing boot loader is more than a couple of versions out of date will cause you severe problems i.e. "bricked transmitter".
