No PPM ! Help

openTx has introduced a range of new features, ideas and bling. It is fast becoming the firmware of choice for many users. openTx will run on ALL current hardware platforms, including the gruvin9x and sky9x boards. Work has already started to support the new FrSky X9D radio!

No PPM ! Help

Post by juanquy »

After flashing otx 2.1 I no longer had any ppm input to my DJT. The D receiver did indicate I had a link. In my DJT The switches are in off position.
I then flashed back to ersky9xr and now had no ppm out?

Just to make sure, your radio is a 9XR-PRO, right?

I can help you with Ersky9x. What version of it did you install? Check the "Model Setup / protocol" menu. Make sure "External Module" is enabled and set to PPM.

Hey Joao : thank I will answer your question later tonight, I'm at work right now thank you so much for your help.
Yes its 9XR-PRO, It was working fine until I flash it to OpenTX v 2.1 , now I'm back to Ersky9x v2.20 but still not ppm or sbus signals at all.

External Module is enable and set to ppm.

What are the other settings in the protocol menu?
Make sure the DJT is fully inserted in the radio.

Hi: Didn't touch the module at all, it just happened after I flash it.
Flashed it to v 2.18 and still the same issue, It have to be something with the firmware. I was ready to give a try to OpenTX but now its all a mess lol.
I have another interesting thing to talk about but let me give you all the info you ask,

Flashed it back to to v 2.20

here is the protocol menu :

Trainer polarity set POS
Internal module is enable.
Proto PPM 8CH 300sec
PPM2 StartChan Follow
PPM FrLen 22.5mSec
Polarity POS

External Module is enable
Proto PPM 8CH 300sec
PPM2 StartChan Follow
PPM FrLen 22.5mSec
PPM Drive OpenDrain
1st Chan 1
Polarity POS

My boot loader is v1.3

OK Here is something weird I just realize.
I have a Flytrap 24" ,just a 2 channels little slope wing with a Frsky V8R4-II not sbus or cppm just pure PWM and It is working fine. I tested yesterday.
Them, I have a little 180 quad with this board :
F3 V4 Flight Control Board AIO 25mW 200mW 600mW Switchable Transmitter OSD BEC PDB Current Sensor
and this RX :
FD802 Tiny Frsky 8CH Telemetry RSSI Receiver Compatible FRSKY... its wired to the board in sbus port( the board also allow PPM I did tried this already and still no rx signals in Betaflight) also the RX switch is set for sbus.
Well I been flying that little quad for almost 6 months with a DJT module.... DJT do not support sbus right? so how I did it?
Them everything stop after I flash the damn Transmitter!!.
I can send you pictures so you can see all is wired for sbus and it was working fine LOL

well sorry for this long txt but its better is you know all about in order to troubleshoot this issue better.

millions thanks !

No it is not a software problem or all other radios wouldn't also work. Also the problem is present with both ersky9x and OpenTX.
My suggestion is stick with Ersky9x as it seems that the OpenTX developers team are not very interested on this radio anymore. Ersky9x is still being developed regularly for it..
External Module is enable
Proto PPM 8CH 300sec
PPM2 StartChan Follow
PPM FrLen 22.5mSec
PPM Drive OpenDrain
1st Chan 1
Polarity POS
I think we found your problem, at least with Ersky9x. Change the setting above to

PPM Drive FULLdrive
My boot loader is v1.3
You should update it.
Please go to the test versions forum page

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676

Then download the file "ersky9xProvR221e7.zip", and extract and install the file "ersky9xr_rom.bin"
Upload the latest bootloader from it as well.. You will have to enter maintenance mode to do it.
Although it is a test version, it is pretty stable and it has many cool new features :)
DJT do not support sbus right? so how I did it?
The DJT has nothing to do with SBUS. It is the receiver that is generating the SBUS signal (Thanks to Midelic). And as it is a D8 compatible receiver, the SBUS it generates has only 8 channels.. The DJT only sends 8 channels anyway :)

Please change the setting I've mentioned above and I believe that will fix your problem ;) Good luck.

Well I think I mess up here, Some point my screen when very dark, if I boot in maintenance the screen is working ok, anyways I'm charging the battery and will try later, so to made this more clear for me the process is maintenance mode is with trim inward or outward ?
flash ersky9r.rom pressing trims inward and flash bootloader pressing trims outward , right?

You probably have the contrast changed. If you can see anything on the display (try looking at different angles), you should be able to go LONG LEFT from the main screen, then press MENU to enter the "Display" menu, then you should be on te contrast setting. Adjust this to around 25 to start with.

Or, in case you can't do as Mike suggested, start the radio in bootloader mode and then connect it to the computer. Start eepskye and download the eeprom onto eepskye.
Then click the general settings tab just above model 1, and change the contrast setting to around 25. Mine is 27 I think.
Then flash the eeprom back to the radio.

To enter maintenance mode, start the radio while holding the horizontal trims outwards. Then select "Update Bootloader". After that point the radio to the latest firmware file you've downloaded and press MENU long. When finished updating, press the EXIT key a couple times to exit the maintenance menu.

Take it easy, we will try to help you :)
Please check something. Remove your DJT module with the radio turned off obviously, and have a look inside the radio"s module bay . Can you see any bit of plastic surrounding the pins? If so, that will need removing because it will prevent the DJT from being fully inserted, not making good contact.

I will try to find out why you are having the other alarm..
I don't understand your question about the pots. Is that in calibration? Just follow the on screen messages. The radio will tell you what to do..

In the calibration Menu I have this option:
====MENU LONG for Pot====
if you press MENU for a few seconds it bring you to another submenu
===Config. Pots. =======
P1 has Detent []
P2 has Detent []
P3 has Detent []

I will remove the module and insert it again, its been there for almost 2 years without issue, but who knows..
Last night I tried my slope wing, and its working the issue is with the quad.

I did a Backup of my TX before flash it but unfortunately I did it with Campanion 2.1.9 , I was looking at my models in Simulation Mode and PPM was set to OpenDrain or maybe Campanion change it , I really don't know.

will back after work.
Thank you

So, it is working with another model? :o
If so THERE IS NO PROBLEM with the radio then.. Probably the quad setup, Or the quad programming on the radio..

Re: No PPM ! Help

Post by juanquy »

Hi joao:

Yes its working with another model but Im not using sbus. the model have a V8R4-II cables from servos (2) are connected straight to RX plus the Batt.
Problem is with RX connected via sbus to a FC.
I did not touch the config of the FC ( Betaflight) at all I just Tflash the TX and when I tried it It was not working anymore.
BTW I did tried PPM set to OpenDrain on this model and it work too. so Maybe the FD802 Tiny Frsky 8CH RX went bad same time I did flash the TX, weird coincidence. I will look to see if I do have another sbus RX not sure if I do have it.

regards and thank a lot for your help. I do appreciate it Joao!

Re: No PPM ! Help

Post by jhsa »

The SBUS has nothing to to with the radio or the RF module.. It has to do with the receiver. So, your radio is working as it should, or you wouldn't be able to fly the other model.. You have a problem between the F802 and the flight controller..

Normally yes.. OpenDrain was implemented for some modules that prevented the radio from turning completely OFF..
