Wanted Mainboard & LCD for T9xr Trransmitter

Post by mcconns1 »

New member and new to RCing as well. I purchased a turnigy 9xr radio last year and after sitting on shelf for 9 months, while building Quad, the LCD screen and backlight are dead. Fully charged correct lipo battery.

I have decided to ditch the mainboard and LCD, and go with upgraded units.

I would like to purchase either a Gruvin9X or a Sky9x mainboard, hopefully assembled and tested would be great. what the H... I'll even consider a turnigy 9xr stock board.

Also I would like to know where to buy a direct & correct replacement LCD screen for the turnigy 9xr.

Thanks and regards to all,

Neither the Gruvin nor sky9x boards will fit the 9XR, they were made for the 9X which is mechanically very different.

HK used to sell the 9XR mainboard but it's been out of stock for ages, not sure if they'll have some again.

kilrah,

Thanks for the quick reply, I learned something, But I'm still interested in purchasing any of the boards. Especially a used, working, good condition, Tgy 9xr mainboard. and I'll consider the other two.

Thank you

I assume you fitted a backlight, the 9X doesn't come with one as standard.
Are you sure the LCD is dead?
Are you running the firmware it comes with or have you updated it?
If you have a multimeter we can suggest some tests to see if you can get everything working again.

He has a 9XR radio Mike. And I think the 9XR already has a backlight fitted? I do think it is very strange that both LCD and backlight are dead. I also believe it might be repairable..

The Gruvin Board sold for around $135 and the Sky board sold for $95.
Still interested?

A new 9XR-PRO is $99.99, and you would have spare mechanical parts from the 9XR for it!
The 9XR-PRO essentially includes a SKY board.

Yes I am still interested, at this point my interest is in a 9xr board because of what Kilrah said about the two upgrade boards would only work with the 9x, is this because of size constraints or something else? Anyone out there that can repair these radios for a fee? I have been waiting for HK to restock the 9xr mainboard, not sure how much longer to wait!

I feel it is worth some investigation. Something as simple as the contrast setting being 0 can give the impression the LCD isn't working.
Are you using the firmware it came with or have you upgraded it?

I upgraded to er9x, when I first got the radio, all was good and worked for the 1st 3months just fine, good enough to bind receiver and Tx. and calibrate radio thru pixhawk. I just read the memory and program using eepe, the contrast is set to 25.

Does the radio still control servos through the receiver?

did you do another update before it quit ? I think Mike is on the right track asking about the firmware. Sometimes if you put the wrong firmware on the thing it will make the display blank.

which processor is in your 9xr ?

OTOH, I have a brand new 9xr main board . If updating the firmware doesnt fix this for you, PM me and we can work it out - sold

Well if you could read the contrast setting from eepe, then the MCU isnt completely dead.
What about MIke's question about being able to control servos ?
Does it beep at you ? I sold my 9xr so I cant recall exactly when they beeped or if it is a programmable setting .

Maybe the memory got corrupt. I'd try to flash it again.

It no longer beeps, nor is the Tx bound to the Rx. So it does not control the servos.

Still looking for a correct and direct replacement LCD screen for the tgy 9xr. Any suggestions?

Hmm, are you sure the radio is ON? Do the blue LED light turn on?

You could some power problem.. Try gently pushing all connectors down.. See if it helps..

Since you have indicated that the mainboard is not responding and you have a replacement mainboard in route.
Maybe a defective mainboard is the root problem and replacing the board will allow your lcd to work properly.

I sure hope so, but nothing like having a few spares around. you never know, seems these radios LCD is flaky.

Radio is on!! Ready LED nice and bright. If I press on the mainboard to the far right side over the cross switches next to the nine(9) pin connector (J23) the LCD backlight lights up, But the LCD text is still very very dim.

You mean the backlight is very dim, or you can see stuff on the LCD but very dim?

I would say you have a bad connection somewhere. Maybe you will have to start touching components with the soldering iron.. get a magnifier glass and check components for bad soldering or even no solder.. you could also post a high resolution picture of your board so we can look at it..

The LCD includes some "charge pump" circuits to boost the supply voltage to the voltage needed to make it work. For these to operate, there are some capacitors on the main board. They are in a line just below the LCD connector. They are a brown colour with no numbers on them. I would guess one, or more, of them has a poor soldered connection.

First off when the LCD was totally dead I followed someones advice (while searching/surfing various forums) to remove and clean the ribbon cable, I did and reconnected the cable to the connector and this is when it went from being totally blank to showing text very very dimly. Since then I have had the board out several times, inspecting components, solder joints, or lack of, also looking for solder bridges and/or cold solder joints nothing so far, at which time I posted here looking for replacements. Next time I pull the board hopefully it will be to replace with the one coming from rperkins, i will attempt to get a few photos then.

Thank you

Hey guys received the new Tgy 9XR mainboard from rperkins, thank you. Now I'm a little gun shy about flashing er9x onto this new board the mcu is an M128. Any suggestions as to the correct er9x hex file?

I believe if you tell eepe that you have a m128 MCU the program will download the appropriate firmware. IIR there are 2 places to tell eepe that you have M128. One is in the avrdude configuration section( the gear icon near the top of the program). this is so avrdude passes the correct parameters for flashing the radio. The other place is under File... preferences. This is where eepe determines which firmware to download .

You should not have to manually pick a file off the internet to flash unto the radio.

good luck

There are software compatible lcd displays available (dimensions are smaller, 2.1", but it has a clear image)

This is, I believe but not absolutely sure, that display that I bought (around 11$ on ebay) and that is running on an original 9xr board.

hello guys,

Thanks a million for everyones suggestions and the 9xr board from rperkins. I had to crank the contrast to 37 to get a viewable display. The backlight works also without having to tweak the 9xr board. Therefore I do believe I have a defective LCD. My search continues for a direct LCD replacement.

Hey Guys,

Just found this LCD. it appears to be the correct size, have the correct number of connector pins, have the correct controller. has anyone tried this one or from the datasheet does it seem like it may work? If so, I'll be the guinea pig and try it out.
