Member's Locations

Post by Flaps 30 »

Having seen that people have asked for help that would to some extent depend upon their location/country and their profile shows nothing as to where they are. Wouldn't it be possible to make someone's location as part of the 'must fill in' membership applications?

I belong to a couple of forums where the above is part of the terms of membership and it has proved very helpful.

Great idea, thanks for acting on it Rob.
As you can see from my "footer" message all of my posts make a request to upgrade ones location in their profile.
So many requests for help but without a location I found myself waiting, or having to ask.
So how does this new option work?
When I look at a profile, mine or others, will it now display a location?
I tried a few that asked for help over the last few days and still didn't see a location addition.

I know many are concerned about privacy but so far this group has kept the exchange of information as I see it , very civil and friendly/helpful. I also haven't read about anyone bragging about their solid gold custom radio cases to worry about being stolen unless the painted cases posted isn't really paint!
I think this is a good thing and maybe local user groups may result from it.
Myself I've met up with several local forum members and we get together now at our local field and share info eye to eye. Our local user group has 7 in it now.

Just showing the country is enough to help people get a general sense of area :)

Anything more detail wise is up to the user!

Is it the flags under your user name that are new? Look under the avatars at the right. Just displaying the country is probably a good call, it will keep people feeling secure.

I agree, country ID is great, but any more detail is a personal choice.

The country flag, and name are new.

These are determined by a geo lookup on the users ip address when they registered.

My code just concatenates this info, and the personal location text from your user profile.

The result is that you always know the 'country'. But nothing more. Any other info is personal choice if the user adds it within their members area.

Another problem ... if you use an automatic IP country checker it will display a false home location if you travel a lot like me, I check this forum a lot while away from home for the boss, so my info is far from correct.
Last week I was in Vancouver, Canada, now back home in the Netherlands, my location is now locked to Canada ... unable to change it.

I understand location concern but doesn't facebook personal posting of every event and family pictures sort of negate a rc forums listing of a little more location detail?
I could see that a person with the NRA would be cautious of any listings, but we fly toy planes?
Anyone here on facebook may want to rethink our anonymity. Birthdates yes, because we may have to ground some of us if that got out.

I can adjust it easily to do this on each post...

Just allow me some time. Current implementation is very basic and all of 20 mins work :-)

A person's tolerance to publishing personal details is, well, a personal thing. Just to be clear, I don't mind if my country (and nothing more) is published, but I can certainly understand why someone would not want to have their location shown. I suppose they risk not getting any useful help here, so absolute privacy may come with a cost to it.

Starting a help post with
"I've had lightning hit my 9x and live in the ---" please help,
may get more focused attention.
When I see someone several countries away asking for parts I usually don't respond because it's to costly to them.
Same for repairing their boards for free or a small cost, postage can add up.
For me, country and if in the USA maybe a state would be a big help in offering parts and repair help is my point.
As rob has it setup now a person on the road posting could always add his home country or state to their posts to avoid confusion. Most of us posting may not be farther than a few hundred miles away for mobile posts usually so close enough I'm thinking.
To be clear, I'll help anyone I can as long as they absorb the parts and shipping costs.

Ok...

I have spent some time this morning on the country display option.

In your member profile settings you now have a drop-down select that will allow you to over-ride the auto detected country.

9/10 you never need to change this.. but if you are someone who moves around allot, you can lock the country.

For now.. to make this work I have disabled the flag display. I will get that back in when I have some more time :-)

Anyone else click on the flag? It takes you to a map showing the country. Pretty cool!
