Companion Version 1.52 With Ubuntu 14.10 Not Starting

sorry, I'm a absolute beginner in that area and have bought a FrSky Taranis radio for a copter.
Starting my new hobby I installed the new UBUNTU 14.10 (64bit) version on my PC. Everything worked fine.

Afterwords I installed >companion Version 1.52< with the result "Installation completed" but the program does not start

What I'm doing wrong ?

Did you try to start companion from a terminal? What messages come up?

Did you try to start companion from a root terminal? What messages come up?

Why did you picked 1.52? The actual versions are here -> http://downloads-20.open-tx.org/companion/

I am using companion on my PCLinuxOS machine. Companion installed here. See pic.

thks for your quick response. Yes I downloaded companion from http://www.open-tx.org/2014/01/10/companion9x-v152/.
Now I try to install the actual version which is companion_2.0.13_amd64.deb, correct ? (sorry I'm coming from windows and I'm just changing to Linux (UBUNTU)).

You can see owner and owner group is root.

(It was installed by root!)

Bur Read and eXecute is allowed for others!

last time I tried to configure a joystick in Ubuntu it gave me much more headache than windows and a wasted afternoon.

Hope, you have a dual boot with windows and use companion there at the moment.

I started with SuSE linux, when you bought a box with a manual and a lot of diskettes, no internet then.
Long time ago But in my opinion, it is worth while!!!!!!!

my new PC is without any windows, so no dual boot necessary. UBUNTU 14.10 is running fine with access to the internet

Than I downloaded <companion_2.0.13_ amd64.deb> and afterwords made a double click with the mouse on the left side.

UBUNTU Software center started and asked to install the software.

After entering my password the installations process started and finished with "Installation done"

No Icon in the task list showed up

Having found the Icon in the area "Anwendungen" I klicked on that Icon but nothing happened

PS.: on my Windows7-PC, Companion is running perfect, quick installation and easy to use, but I like to make something different with UBUNTU

Trying to start from terminal either as USER or ROOT is standard procedure, if an installed program won't start by clicking

PS. What desktop manager???? KDE, Gnome, LXDE, .....

I found the following and this was what I did:

Installation
Ubuntu (Unity/GNOME) / Xubuntu (Xfce)
Ab Ubuntu 10.10 können einzeln heruntergeladene Pakete mit einem Doppelklick links auf das entsprechende Paket über das Software-Center installiert werden. Abhängigkeiten werden überprüft und ggf. automatisch nachinstalliert.

terminal window, user level, type "companion" CR -> program starts

terminal window, changed to root (root comand in ubuntu is "sudo", not "su"), type "companion" CR -> program starts

changed allowance, so normal user can NOT run companion. terminal window, user level, type "companion" CR -> program does not start, but give massage "Keine Berechtigung" voila
(I use mc - midnight commander to do things like that, like in good old DOS days with norton commander...)

PS. Jürgen, as your knowledge on linux seems to be " a little weak", I would suggest you get yourself a good book on linux.

Hi to all,
I do not know exactly how I made it but now it works

After checking the <Eigenschaften> of the paket "companion_2.0.13_amd64.deb" and changing the rights to <Datei als Programm Ausführen> the installation started immideately.

In windows an <xyz.exe> Datei is generally executable. It seems to me that this is different in the Linux environment

so, lessons learned
