Newbie Turnigy 9XR vs companion9x

Post by Tech1uk »

Hi

I've just treated myself to a 9XR and thought I would update the software to something better before I add to many models to it.

I'm got my USBAsp drivers installed ok and the latest version of Companion9x.

Problem I got is when I try and read the 9XR (Still on standard software) I'm getting a error saying "Invaild EPPROM File" I can see the temp hex file ok and can open and view it ok in notepad.

Screen shot of the error is below.

Any ideas what can be casuing this or is it just a newbie thing that I have missed??

Cheers

Well it seams that you have chosen the wrong radio in Radio Profile. You say you have 9XR, but you selected 9XR with upgraded CPU M128 (look in Companions title bar).

And what you got there is OpenTX Companion not Companion9x.

And I don't know, but maybe OpenTX Companion is not compatible with the original 9XR firmware and can't decode read EEPROM file. Somebody else should confirm this.

The stock 9XR is read-protected by HK, so it cannot be read out (the process runs but returns garbage, which causes the error).

The first flashing process will erase everything and clear the read protection.

Most 9XRs do ship with the '128 processor installed as standard. The 9XR stock firmware is, in fact, a copy of er9x, but now over 2 years old.

You have the option of updating to the latest er9x (use eepe to do so).

Until you replace the firmware you will not be able to read the EEPROM.

It is that simple.

Thanks all for the advise.

I did think it maybe down to the HK software but I didn't want to take the chance, so I guess I will bite the bullet and go for it.

Also I have taken the unit apart and it is running the M128 chip.

I was also confused with the first comment "what you got there is OpenTX Companion not Companion9x" I thought they were the same thing now or ????

Cheers everyone for your help.

TX replaced 9X quite a way back. Significant changes and improvements.

Go to open-tx.org and make certain you have the latest version.

Silly question....
I take it I will lose all curent model information when I flash the 9XR ?
After the flash I will then be able to back up all model information.

It isn't the end of world if I do, least I know how the mixes work now :)

Yes, the first time you flash new firmware you will lose all your current model information.

After that, yes you will be able to back up your model information.

With eepe and er9x, there is an option to set the special fuse information to protect the EEPROM (model data) from being erased when you flash firmware again. I assume companion/openTx does this, but there is no obvious option to specifically enable this.
