This is not really a 9x specific mod, but I will share it anyways since it is so useful.
It is cold where I live. Really cold. In the winter time the best idea is to stay indoors and wait for spring to arrive. But I want to fly in spite of the winter. The transmitter warmer bags are pretty much a non option since they prevent hand launches.
Holding on to the metal transmitter sticks is unbearable, even if you use gloves that only leaves the finger tips exposed. The fingers start hurting within minutes and then go dead numb. I have found that wooden sticks improve the situation drastically. They are relatively simple to make and makes it possible to stand the cold much longer.
I use pencils that I cut to my preferred stick length. The center lead is easily removed with a drill. Do this on a newspapper since the resulting coal fragments will color everything black. Then I use a M3 tap to cut the groves. Sanding off the paint and dipping the finished stick in varnish finishes the job.

Re: Wooden sticks for winter flying
Nice. I guess the other option is some 'heat shrink' tubing over the stick
But I do like the result yours gives!

Slope Soaring, FPV, and pretty much anything 'high tech'

Re: Sv: Wooden sticks for winter flying
I have tried heat shrink tubing and it helps somewhat against the cold. But wood is better (and more stylish

Just thinking,
Maybe silicone fuel tubing?
I guess you would have to use a long screw into the stick and then tubing over that?
Maybe the larger tubing would actually stretch enough to fit the stock stick?
Unscrew the stick and push the tubing on from the small shaft end towards the larger end with a little liquid soap on the shaft first to make it slide. This would however make the stick end larger in diameter?
If the pencil works and you can fly then it's a winner.
Never gave it much thought living in Los Angeles.
You may have the start of a great cold weather stick accessory.
Maybe HK will see your post and it'll be a new accessory on the 9xr site next week?
Shame on me.

Re: Wooden sticks for winter flying
That is nice, but more for people that hold the sticks with 2 fingers.. I think not possible to use it by people that fly with the thumbs, like me. But is a very good idea. I like it..

Re: Wooden sticks for winter flying
May be it is time to hook up some heating wire on the stick.
Have you tried this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170784592088?ss ... 1438.l2649

I have one... gave up one using it because I could never get my hand back in to get control of the model on launch!kaos wrote:May be it is time to hook up some heating wire on the stick.

Maybe that is because I fly slope soarers - and have to hand launch
