Replace p1 or p2

Post by Tokaz »

Hello.

Hope someone can help me here. I like to replace p1 or p2 with a 3 postition switch.
Im flying a naza now with gps. I use the existing 3pos switch to control my flight modes. The new 3 pos switch i like to use for trigger for my nex5n. I have this one to trigger my nex5

If anyone have done this mod and have pictures it would be great.

Hi,

I do not use the trainer switch so, I changed it for a 3position switch and connected in parallel with the pot 2.
For this you will need a resistor, (I used 3k7, it was handy) this will avoid short circuit if the pot accidently touch the contrary "end point" of the switch position.

This way I still have the pot working normaly when the switch is in neutral and with the pot on center I have 3 position switch

You could install a normal push button on the back of the radio or somewhere else, and connect the wires from the now unused trainer switch to it.. like that you still have the trainer.. you never know the future ;)

You need to make sure the push button is 'push to break' as this is the way the trainer is configured :-)

you can also simulate a 3 position switch with a pot by programming without mod. so each 1/3 of turn is a position. That is what I do with my FPV OSD. I takes a 3 position switch to switch between fly mode. then takes another 3 postion switch between 3 different display mode.

with this radio, I boubt, I have futaba and JR for that mission, this one is my best radio  but yes, it´s an idea using a push to keep the Trainer function!

In that case that's DAAAANNNGEROUS.. if you have trainer setup when you're flying normally without the trainer cable and the button decide not to make contact, you lose control and bye bye pride and joy..

From now on I will make sure that trainer is always off if I'm not using it

Check the firmware out... You will see that this is the way the stock button works. Surprised me too :-)

yeah, but nothing can be done about it? maybe moving one wire? and changing software of course?

Yep, if you look at how switches are wired in the 9x you'll see they're all wired as normally closed. That's probably why the stock firmware has that stupid SWITCH ERROR at bootup, kind of a contact test. If you have all switches up as you should, all switches should be closed, if not... SWITCH ERROR.

But then on stock firmware the trainer function is reversed too (switch released = student has control), so we'll never know what their logic is...

as far as i can see, that would be be easy fix. On the switch change the outer wire from 1 side to the other and and change the fw. Of course this would have to be done as soon as you flash your radio. Also a warning to all the people that already changed to er9x and open9x. This can be really dangerous.

Only reason I discovered the issue is I replaced my trainer switch with a rotary encoder; and moved the trainer to a push button switch.

Was really surprised when a standard push button. (make on press) was resulting in a reversed logic in the firmware!

In the bigger picture.. it is only really an issue if you use the 'trainer' function as the trigger for your trainer signal going on/off.

The tough part is actually enforcing the change! I am not certain enough people use the trainer - to justify a change in the trainer code; or the fact that an option is needed to cater for those who don't rewire the switch!

Yep, I'd say there's much more risk in changing the fw, and then having people mess up with their current models or new users not seeing they should rewire the switch when flashing than the switch contact just deciding to fail out of nowhere...

Hmm I just had a look, in er9x you can't set another switch than TRN? And the setting is global, so if you turn on the trainer function in the radio settings for one model it stays active if you change model?

yep and if that sw fails you can't control the model anymore..

CORRECTION: Kilrah, yes you can choose other switches, even custom switches. And you can turn it on or off in every model menu. just checked..

:) conclusion, if you do not use the trainer port like me just solder the wires like I did. I will post a pic of this mod explaning how and where to put the resistor. It´s working great. Normaly the multirotor pilots have more need for 3 positions switches then pot´s, but with this simple mod we can have both without a problem.

PS: what have been told in the above post´s, it´s saying to check all your original solders, contacts and connections if you have never done it before, just in case! ;)

Lol... My biggest issue is time!

This time last year I had two kids old enough to be out at school all day.

This yea I have the 5 month old! Do generally I am tired, grumpy and using any spare time for actual flying!

I have no idea how Bertrand manages. His latest addition is younger than mine, and he seems to have no limit on his time.

I can only assume his wife is more forgiving than mine :)

Side_View_3_Po_Switch.JPG
This mod is for the guys who have the need for another 3 Position switch.
You will have the pot2 working normaly, but have to use it to connect the new 3Pos. You can mount it on another place, but because I do not use the trainer function, I changed it for this usefull switch for the Multirotor pilot´s.

I know that this is not the best picture, but this is a very simple mod, you can´t go wrong.

The center wire (RED) should be soldered with another RED to a 3k7 resistor in serie with the POT center (This resistor will avoid you to accidently short circuit when having the Pot on one end, and the switch on oposite side) the other RED wire goes to center of the 3 Position Switch, the other two wires go directly from the Pot to the new switch in parallel (one on each contact).
Calibrate, put your pot on center and you are done, enjoy. ;)
Just use some heat shrink on the resistor as you see in the picture.

Attention- If you are going to use the trainer switch place, you need to solder the trainer wires together and use some heat shrink, or use as said here a quality push button for the trainer and put it on the back of your radio.
