Mod idea - Built in "head Tracker" Inside the radio.

Post by GTiDon »

Just a thought
Mod idea - Built in "head Tracker" Inside the radio.

Could a a 2 Axis Gyro or eccelerometer be used as a input to the radio. Can be used to output to 2 channels.

To control a camera for example. Tilt the radio forward and back to tilt the camera and tilt the radio left and right to control the Panning of the camera.

I fly FPV with a screen and not goggles so I think this could work nicely.

The sensitivity will have to be tuneable, neutral position calibrated easily on demand and you must be able to turn it off with a switch and default back to neutral position.

Program something like an arduino to output a ppm stream, and read the accelerometers. Then you only need to mount it on the back of the radio and use the ppm in.

plug and play for what you are trying to do. Basically it is the head tracker in the Fatshark goggle. just plug in the trainer port, there you go.

Check on rcgroups, there's a thread for an open source DIY head tracker that works quite well. Uses a sensor stick that costs about 25$ and an arduino.

What about using an android phone connected to the radio via Bluetooth? Can the phones accelerometers be used for inputs?

I think that needs someone to write some code in the FW. using either the tx or phone, if you have a 180 degree, or greater, pan servo, it is going to be a little awkward. ;)
this is what i plan to put in my sky9x: http://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopic ... 000#p61275
for non-goggle FPV or just use it for photographic camera gimbal and it can be activated on demand with a DPDT switch.
But I think to fly FPV, a goggle with head tracker is the best investment you can have. Never worry about sunlight /glares of monitor.

The open source one doesn't drift, however as always you'll have a little bit of "noise".
