Added FrSky telemetry - clueless how to actually use it.

Post by Flydigital »

I have added a smartie parts Eztelemetry to go with my new FrSky Tx,Rx module in my 9x.
I then updated the er9x to er9x frSky.

I seems to have some new screens with 'Rx' and 'Tx'=0 and another screen with various other telemetry parameters.

But then what? They are all at zero. I can;t seem to find an idiots guide to actually using it.

I got this set up as I was hoping the screen would give voltage of my multicopter and maybe its distance, height etc. (Stuff that I get already using FPV display but I wanted it on the control unit too)

Any help on where to start, or rather complete the set up, would be appreciated.
Thanks

ok, for a start, you said that TX and rx are zero? That is not good.. what RF module and receiver are you using??
You should have the link quality on bith tx and rx. something between 90 and 100 when the receiver is near the radio..
Something is not right..

Which Tx module are you using (DJT or XJT)?
What receiver(s) are you using?

Sorry wrong information. The MC wasn't on.
I now have the following info. So my question now is what do these numbers mean and what can I do with them? Voltage alerts etc. or any other info

Rx=105 Tx=88
Then underneath that are 4 smaller numbers:
77 106 76 104

It is a DJT module linked to a D8R-II plus

Ahhhhh, pheww, good.. no problem then :)
The 4 numbers are the minimum and maximum values for the TX and RX fields.. Normally we use RX to measure signal strength..
Well it looks like you are ready to Rock & Roll.. What sensors do you have? Do you want to buy sensors? do you want to build your own? If you only need voltage sensors you don't really need to buy them. You only need 2 resistors and 1 capacitor really ;)

Ok as you have a D8R-II Plus. you might have a little jumper on the A1 pins on the side of the receiver.. let's help you to have some receiver voltage on the screen then :)

Leave the jumper in place.. That will route the receiver voltage to the A1 analog telemetry port.
Now go to the telemetry menu on your model settings..
Scroll down to "A1 Channel" And change the range from 0.0V to 13.2V
You may ask, why the heck do I want to do that?? :)

Because the analog ports on the receiver accept a maximum of 3.3V before you can light a cigarette on them :)
So, we need a voltage divider at the input. the receiver already has one built in and you connect the A1 port to it with that jumper I mentioned above, so we can read the RX internal voltage.. If you want to read a flight pack like a 3 cell lipo battery for example you need an external voltage divider. DO NOT CONNECT THE LIPO DIRECTLY TO THE RECEIVER OR YOU'LL FRY IT..

What does a voltage divider do? Well, it divides the voltage  Imagine that you want to measure the 3 cell lipo. Normally when it is fully charged the voltage is 12.6V. Too much for the receiver as it accepts only 3.3V max.
So we would need a 4:1 voltage divider for example. That means that the voltage at the output is 4 times less than the voltage at the input.

Now, going back to the receiver, in the telemetry menu I told you to insert 13,2V as range, right? this is because 3.3V * 4 (divider ratio) = 13.2V this is the maximum voltage you can measure with that divider without the voltage at the receiver exceeding 3.3V. Cool, right?? :) You should now have the receiver voltage on your screen :)
Google a bit about voltage dividers..
Just ask if you want to build your own.. ;)

I hope it helps

Thanks João! Wow1 A lot of great advice there. I'll need to go through this slowly! I'll have a go and let you know how it goes. :)

yes please, let us know. Once you understand the logic of it, it is quite simple..
Have a look at this file. This manual is for the 9XR-PRO with ersky9x which is a more advanced version of er9x but most is equal. Have a look at configuring the custom switches, safety switches (these two you will use for alarms) and also from page 36 onwards, the telemetry.. Have fun.. ;)

I just put A1 to 13.2v on the transmitter Now I have a reading on the screen A1=5.0v. The MC has a 3s lipo on it so am expecting 12.2v. There is a jumper connecting x and a1 on the Rx and the manual says it divides on a ration of 4:1. So I'm getting somewhere already but not quite! What would explain the 5.0v reading?

With the jumper on X and A1, then you are measuring the RECEIVER voltage on A1, so 5.0V looks correct.
If you wish to measure the lipo voltage, then you need to use a pair of resistors as a vlotage divider to provide a suitable voltage to plug into A1 or A2. Make sure you don't apply more than 3.3V to either A1 or A2.

ok understood. I will get frsky battery sensor which divides the voltage and plugs into the Rx. This I think is the module you say can be home made but as I'm not an electronics person this should do the trick.

I think really voltage is my main priority. GPS would be nice but that add on is a bit more pricey.

One question I have is what the other info already available would be useful for.
-The Rx and Tx values - would these be used presumably to warn you if your signal is weakening? If correct what would be the warning settings.
- The voltage of the Rx (5.0v now displaying) Why would I want to know this? What is it used for?

Thanks for your help. Now close to making use of the voltage warnings at least :D

that is correct.. RSSI (TX) and TSSI (TX) show how strong the link between the module and the receiver is.
In the telemetry 2 menu there are configurations for the alarms and I think they are already on..
