Forum Upgrade

Post by Rob Thomson »

Hi All

I have delayed as much as I can - but it is approaching time to upgrade the forum software.

My aim is to do a backup, and then an upgrade. What I don't know yet is what will go wrong!

All going well this upgrade will happen this week - so dont be surprised if the forum suddenly 'breaks' while I do the work!

I was on this page:

viewtopic.php?f=48&t=1454&start=60#unread

, and tried to go to page 2 and got:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method bbcode::offtopic_pass() in /var/www/html/openrcforums.com/forum/includes/bbcode.php(113) : regexp code on line 1

I found it eventually, but I still miss it as a single link (one click) and being available at the bottom of the page as well as the top. Now, if I'm at the bottom of a page I have to get back to the top, then do TWO clicks!

To me it just looks cleaner. And the Quick links optiuon is available on every page. Maybe putting the quick links also at the bottom of every page as well..
Before, we had to go to the board index to access "unread posts" and "view active topics"? I think that needed more clicks ;) :)

I will add it back in.

Unfortunately the upgrade removed 99% of the mods I have made over the years!

Rob, is it possible to also keep the quick links? I find it very useful and quick to find stuff like my own posts and active topics..

Thanks

Of course you can.. quick links "View active topics" no need to go to the bookmarks and look for the link :)
When you go to the bookmarks you still have to navigate to the correct one. So no, it is not faster.. quick link is a great improvement in my opinion.

kilrah said "in the bookmark bar", so this is a single click.

Re: Forum Upgrade

Ahh, ok.. I don't use it then. Too much on my screen ;) :)

Well Rob could add the other links as before but without removing the quick links button, right??
I personally like the clean look the forum has now. For me one click more represents half a second and some exercise to my finger ;) so I'm not really bothered about that..
If one or two clicks make things much better, which in my opinion it does, then I don't complain about them.
The fact is that specially the board index looked very messy before and sometimes I wasted longer than 3 clicks looking for something I needed..
In my opinion improving the search engine is much more important..
But this is just my opinion as for me either way is fine..

Hi Rob Thomson,
I was just looking through "Members" and see a lot of (huge) new members being add here in 2015.
Also many of these have no profile info and many with female names which we know the percentage of women active in RC hobby
is much lower then men.
It looks like many of these new member registrations are not real.
Any thoughts about this ? :?:

They are spammers/bots.

We ban them when they post, but if they register and do nothing they usually stay there for a while until the next cleanup. It's tedious to go through everything and delete them, also without making mistakes and deleting genuine members.

Yeah, we have to wait until they do something and then kick them out :) :D Or they get kicked if they don't do anything anyway

Hi Rob,

"spammers/bots" OK, I see its a big job then having to reviewing them, WOW !.

I just tried (Topic tools) to "Subscribe topic" and it failed to do so.
A message came up saying:

AJAX error
Something went wrong with the request and the server returned an invalid reply.

Also, same thing happen with "Bookmark topic" too.

Just tried the same subscribe. It worked for me!

I suspect that its because the new forum software needed more ram allocated to php - this has been done since you posted.

Can your check again?

Thanks for the upgrade. I'm in :-)
If I notice anything major out of whack I will post.
Those little tweaks we make are the hardest part to track. For the most part I try not to do them anymore because they get lost or just dont function the same .
thanks again. hopefully this will address some of the auto spam

Nice. I will have to check it out.

I held off on doing the upgrade because it would potentially break things. Turns out it was easy!
