Turnigy 9XR Pro, DJT, D4R-II, Futaba Adapter => Telemetry is not working

Post by Vip0r »

Hey all,

it's curious. i followed this guide to setup telemetrie step by step

https://www.reddit.com/r/Multicopter/co ... i_djt_and/

but the telemetry still showing NOTHING :( No RSSI, nothing else....

- The Futaba Trainer Cable is correct attached. (i double and tripple checked the correct align)
IMG_9674.JPG
- The Telemetry cable from the D4R is connected. Green => FrSky Input on Naze32, Black => FrSky Ground on Naze32
IMG_9675.JPG
Telemetry in cleanflight is enabled,UART Port is configured for FrSky Telemetry

- Model is armed

- Turnigy Telemetry Setups looks like this:
IMG_9676.JPG
IMG_9677.JPG
IMG_9678.JPG
IMG_9679.JPG
IMG_9680.JPG
But the Output is still:

Does anybody have an idea what else i can try? :(

I don't think it affects things as it is automatically set depending on the protocol set, but the baudrate for COM2 should be 9600, not 57600.

What is the firmware revision you have on the 'PRO? (Version menu, value on the SVN line please).

I changed the baudrate on the Remote to 9600 and in cleanflight to "Auto"

-> still no no data ;(

Firmware of my pro is upgraded to

ersky9x-r218

Do you have the controls working, so you know the DJT and D4R-II are working?

What exactly do you mean with "controls working"?

Im sure the DJT/D4R generally should works, i jumped the two pins on the D4R, set the two PINs of the DJT to "Off" and bound the reciever with the F/S-Button. I am able so spin the Motors with the Turnigy. I also see AIL/ELE etc. turning up and down in the reciever-tab in cleanflight.

Is there a "special" way to bind the reciever if i wanna use the Telemetry feature?

Everything looks correct, and so you should be seeing RSSI, at least, from the receiver.

Please backup you EEPROM, then go here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4676#p65894, download "ersky9xProvR219u_music.zip", extract ersky9xr_rom.bin and flash it to the radio.

Then, with everything running, press UP LONG, then LEFT 5 times to get to the DEBUG display. At the bottom of this is a line with "TelRxCount" on it with two numbers. Let me know what these two numbers are, or if either is counting up.

Since the RSSI comes from the receiver, ignpre the naze for now, we need to get the RSSI working.

The DJT signals are normal RS232, so, if you have a serial port available on your PC, and can get the Tx and Rx connected to it, you may test the DJT output.

Otherwise, you probably need to open the Tx up and check the connectivity from the wires going to the DJT and the main board.

Ah, i inderstand. Make sense.

This means i usually should see the rssi on my turnigy, even the telemetry cable on mei d4r-ii is NOT connected?

I should check also the wires of the telemetty port to the turnigy pins on my DJT module?

Hey all,

sorry for the late response but i lost my plane... now i am back in business :)

Telemetry is still not working and i hope somebody have a hint for me.

Is there a way to verify if my RX-Module (DJT) is receiving telemetry data without the DEBUG Menu of the turnigy?
xor
Is there a way to verify if my TX-Module (D4R-II) is sending telemetry data ?

I have a USB2Uart-Convert

Easiest is to install eepe on your PC. Then you need to connect the DJT telemetry to your USB serial converter. Connect GND to GND, Tx to Rx and Rx to Tx.
With the DJT connected to the PC, power on the radio and the model, run eepe and select the Telemetry menu, select the Module tab.
Choose the correct COM port for your serial adapter, then click the Start button. You should see a value in the RxRSSI box at least.

Hi Mike,

i have wired the djt to my usb-2-uart convert like you said.
GND=GND
RX=>TX
TX=>RX
IMG_0639.JPG
As soon as i plug the converter to my notebook the power led comes up:
IMG_0641.JPG
And if i power on my TX another led on the convert goes on:
IMG_0640.JPG
With the usb-convert connected to my notebook i powered on my transmitter and my model, started eepe, selected the right com-port and pressed "Start"

=> Nothing happens :-(
eepe.tiff
i'm asking me why i dont see anything. When i turned on the transmitter the second LED on my converter comes up. This is an indicator that anything is transmitted over the serial right?

Do you have any other suggestions what i can try?

Update:

i have testet it with a serial analyzer tool and can confirm: As soon as the transmitter and my model is powered data will be send to my usb2uart converter...

The DJT has a full RS232 output (+/-6v) using inverted data. Is your serial converter a full converter to RS232 levels etc. or does it output logic level signals?

I have the following converter:

http://www.banggood.com/CP2102-Micro-US ... 26357.html

Im not sure but it sounds like a full rs232 converter. I dont know if it can handle "inverted data"

Im asking me: If we see output data from the djt to the converter as soon model/rx and tx is powered on, can we sure the djt module receives telemetry data from the rx?

It says "UART TTL" so is almost certainly logic level non-inverted.
I think the DJT is outputting telemetry data OK.

I'm assuming your "serial analyzer tool" is monitoring the data from your converter.
Let's check some of the connections.
Keep the GND connection to your converter from the DJT, but connect the signal currently going to the RX pin on the DJT to the RX pin on your converter.
Then go to the telemetry menu and change the "COM2 Function" to "FMSserial". This should cause data to be sent to your converter.

If you don't see any data at all, try the other signal (that went to the TX pin on the DJT).

Thanks for you post mike.

i hope i understand you well. i tried it with this connection:

GND (DJT) to GND (Converter)
RX (DJT) to RX (Converter)
IMG_0642.JPG
in the telemetry menu of eepe i can not change com2 function to FMSerial. I only can select my connected usb converter there
eepe.tiff
i also tried
TX (DJT) to RX (Converter)
IMG_0643.JPG
same result => i click on "start" in the telemetry/module menu of eepe and can not see anything.

Here you can see an example output of the serial analyzer tool when i connect the djt to the converter.

OK, some confusion here, I'll try to explain better.
1. Then go to the telemetry menu (on the radio) and change the "COM2 Function" to "FMSserial".
2. connect the signal (from the Futaba connector, not the DJT) currently going to the RX pin on the DJT to the RX pin on your converter.

Re: Turnigy 9XR Pro, DJT, D4R-II, Futaba Adapter => Telemetry is not working

Post by Vip0r »

Hi mike, thanks again, now it is clear for me. However some bad news ..

First i was confused about the futaba pin-out. The following links describes the PINOUT as followed:

viewtopic.php?t=5057
https://img.rcgroups.com/http://i.imgur ... W3DNVbW5GQ

GND: 2
Signal: 1
short-circuit 5 with 6
(3: NC, 4: Signal in, 5: Bat in, 6: Bat+)

However my telemetry-cable is using PIN 3 and 6 only.

I ended up with testing all of the PINS like this:

Staying GND connected from DJT-Module to GND on my converter. Then i connected each different FUTABA-Pin to the RX on my converter like the following screenshot:
IMG_0644.JPG
I changed the telemetry-settings in my model setup to
COM2 Function => SMSerial
COM2 BAUD => 9600

I fired up my serial analyzer tool and eepe to start capturing and powered on my remote with the following results:

PIN3 => No data at all
PIN6 => Only one small package was transmitted.

Unfortunately then i did a big mistake and connected PIN 2 (GND) also to the rx on my converter. Now the chip on my converter is burned... My Remote and my notebook are staying good... at least :-)

Anyway now i am more confused than before. If you are right an changing COM2 Function to FMSerial will cause sending data from the remote to the FUTABA-Port and i cannot see anything this means the problem have to be inside the remote, right?

I also need a new converter. Do you have any suggestion regarding the converter for me?

Grr.. next time i have to doublecheck to DONT connect GND twice... :(

I think connecting ground twice wouldn't burn anything. The futaba connector also has BATTERY VOLTAGE. So, if you tried ALL PINS as you say, you very likely fried the chip because you connected it to battery voltage. You are lucky you didn't burn anything else..

I've done some checking and I believe this is the correct pinout of the Futaba connector on the 'PRO:
1 -> ppM out
2 -> GND
3 -> Normally NC, goes to Tx on the DJT
4 -> PPM in
5 -> switched BATT +
6 -> Normally NC, goes to Rx on the DJT.

I've check the cable I use to go from the DJT to the Futaba connector and can confirm the serial connections are on pins 3 and 6.
It is worth checking your cable is correct.
If it is OK, then we will need to open up the Tx and check the internal connection.

Hi mike,

ok, i opened the remote and now it is really strange and i am fully confused

PIN3 on my Futaba Port ends on the grey wire of the telemetry cable and is connected to RXd on my DJT Module
Internally PIN3 goes with a red wire to the 9XR-Board on TXd
==>> see the yellow line on the following picture

PIN6 on my Futaba Port ends on the white wire of the telemetry cable and is connected to TXd on my DJT Module
Internally PIN6 goes with a black wire to the 9XR-Board on Gnd

==>> see the blue line on the following picture

Can you confirm this ? Why is PIN6 internally connected to GNd on the Board and RXd on the board is unused. I cant believe this is correct. Can you take a look at the picture?
intwiring Kopie.jpg
For my understanding: RXd on the internal board should go to RXd on the DJT Module and TXd on the internal board should go to TXd on the DJT Module. Or should go RXd to TxD and vice versa?

Additionally i opened the remote and found the following two parts "flying arround". Anybody know this plates?
plates.JPG
Thanks a lot for your great help mike!

BOOM. i switched the connector on the board. Internally the black wire now goes to RXd and the red wire to TXd.

IT WORKS :-) It seems the remote was not correct assembled :)

Thanks a lot Mike. You was a huge help for me!

These plates hold the pots in the joysticks in place so they can't slip out.
