These do cost a lot ($39.26 each + shipping) and are smaller, so they do not fit readily into our normal 9x radio's.

They maybe, be well built though ?

Yes, there are two Hobby King videos out that talk about replacing both Gimbals.
I do thumbs on top of stick, so I think I will not purchase this product for myself. ;)

If you install both, you can only use them as 2 axis, which considering, it might not be bad due to the quality of the gimbals. I might give it a thought though. And yes they are a bit costy.

No, you can use the Stick turning pots on both 3 Axis Gimbals if you wire them up to one of the other pot (replacing) on your Radio.
If you view the Hobby King video's, when they move from the Stick rudder pot to the third Axis turning Gimbal pot, the stick rudder pot is disconnected.
So you will have hardware pot's in you radio that are not wired (connected) to your radio.
You are moving the wiring connections from one of your 7 pots to the 3 Axis Gimbal turning pot.

Depends on the hardware you have, if connecting it to a 9xtreme board you have 4 unused Analog inputs. Currently 2 are allowed at the same time as there are only 2 extra pots in the firmware.. I'm sure Mike might allow more in the future?? ;) :)

The 9XR-PRO has a 'spare' analog input. This may be used to convert the ELE switch into a 3-pos switch, but I recently added the option to use this as "POT4". So, if you fit one of these gimbals, you don't need to give up an existing pot.

This may also be done on the SKY board. The AR9X board allows two extra pots, as does the 9Xtreme. The 9Xtreme may, in due course, allow a total of 4 extra pots.

Besides rudder/yaw i honestly dont see another use for this third axis, since it is spring loaded. This gimbal is very good for quad racing (the trend) because you will get full directional control in one stick and the throttle alone on the other, which becomes very handy in one hand and on the other this radio would be limited for these models only.
I really think that Hobbyking should make new better gimbals for the 9xr pro and sell it with a built in module, which would make it ready to use, otherwise this radio will never be a competitor for the taranis.
But...correct me if im wrong.

Hi OctavioS,
Here is someone who has installed the Taranis Gimbals in his 9XR-Pro.
You have to do some special modding to do it.

Updated May 23, 2017: 9XR-Pro and 9XR Radios an upgrade to Taranis Gimbals.

Yes I know. I've seen the mod, but you don't get full movement at the corners, because the sticks hit the faceplate. So I'm still considering. I already have the gimbals though. Hehe

Someone has "hacked" one of these into a Taranis: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost ... ount=46229. A later post indicated he had to make the mounting holes into slots to get it to mount.

For sure, everybody knows the taranis gimbal base is wider than the 9xr pro, so he definetly ha to do some "streching".

I have successfully installed both gimbals.
IMG_20151230_002410.jpg
Packaging is excelent. internal construction as well. I would preffer better/nicer gimbal ends, as this looks to cheap. Abbility to setup each axis is excelent. Dow setting up holl reader and magnets is still puzzeling me. I didnt set it up according to instructions but it works just fine.
For intended purpuse instructions are dicent enough, but for installation as second gimbal or using 3rd axis instead of pots is not documented well.
gimbals use apsolut maximum of space, so wires really (really I mean REALLY) nicelly tuck away. Wires must be parallel and under no curcumstances cross each other near magnet screw as it almost touch them.
IMG_20151230_002335.jpg
I tryed several times to fit them, incuding using hot glue, but at the end I used black tape to aling them outside, and then glue them to 3m pad together (since I used them in first attemt I have found my own, that are even tinner).

Now Im waiting for rotary encoder and 6 positon switch to replace two pots with 3rd axis.
Does anyone know if wire color coding is ok (red + black - white signal)?

New 3 Axis Gimbal Upgrade for Turnigy 9XR/9XRPro

Post by Daedalus66 »

I got mine working with a minimum of trouble, though as noted above, the wires have to be routed just right along the side of the case to give clearance. I plugged the knob into the rudder input socket. I will probably remove the left stick and control throttle with a pot mounted where the TRN switch is now.

I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to adjusting the magnets. Initially, only rudder produced a reasonable output that required just a bit of rotation of the magnet to get it centered well enough so it would calibrate to 100% each way. The other two required rotation of 20-30 degrees to get real output, then a couple of rounds of fine tuning to get the outputs symmetrical. Once I had figured out what I was doing I went back and retweaked all three and it didn't take more than a few minutes.

Doing it again, before I mounted the stick assembly I would plug in the three sensors and do a first setup while it was easy to see what I'm doing. Then tweak after mounting.

As I have both gimbals Ive installed one of 3rd axis instead of one of the pots.

simple replacement of wires in connector, one re-calibration and thats that
Wire color coding is standard.

I want one of these, but HK is perpetually out of stock. Are they just selling off the last of their 9xr pro related products and pushing their flysky rebrands?
