9XR-PRO and FrSky XJT module – Telemetry – Mod or not?

Post by wolfster »

Hi all,

Please excuse a total newbie question and I apologies if I've overlooked the answer but I have been reading around but cannot seem to find a straight forward answer to the following:

Is the 9XR-Pro able to display telemetry from FrSky XJT module without modification or the “Frsky Telemetry & Head Track Module Extent Cable for 9XR Pro”?

If a modification is required please can someone point me at some photos of the mod? I can only find instructions on how to mod the DJT module not the XJT, but it's properly user error! :|

Thanks in advance.

Paul

I think you don't need to modify the XJT. The 9XR-PRO is already prepared to accept the XJT module.. But you will need to update the firmware to the latest ersky9x. The version of the fw the radio ships with still doesn't support it I think..

Appreciated thanks gents,

I have upgraded to the 2.14 (v.679-Mike) firmware

Now I just need to figure out how to display the voltage from x8r receiver with the FrSky FLVSS LiPo Voltage Sensor (SMART port connected to the x8r) on my 9XR-PRO!

My steep learning curve continues!

Thanks again,

Hi Mike,

I have the same issues with my 9xr pro. Just did flash it to

V.1323 - Mike
SVN: ersky9x-r215

FLVSS is in the smart port of my X8R... and running.

Can you have a look at my screenshots for the settings and help me out please?

Could it be a binding issue? I read something about 8 or 16 mode for the X8R...

thank you so much

Daniele

What protocol are you using to the XJT? You need PXX and D16 selected.

So can someone clarify for me how to setup the telemetry on my 9XR with the XJT module? I am using an X4R receiver and the kiss fc, 24A kiss ESCs. I have all the wiring correct (according to the rotor riot RC5 build video) and I am just trying to get the 9XR to give me the voltage and RSSI signal and so on. Any help would be appreciated.

This thread is about the 9XR-PRO, and you refer to the 9XR. Which radio do you have?
The 9XR-PRO requires no modification to work with the XJT.

I've just purchased a Turnigy 9 xr Pro and I would like to use a DJT module because I already have some D receivers.

Does the DJT also work with telemetry without mods or external cables? I also prefer DJT over XJT because I'm not sure about how to flash non eu firmware.

Thank you

Hi Paolo, welcome to the forum.

If your DJT was not modified to send telemetry on pin 5, then you will need the external cable from hobbyking in order to receive the telemetry..

Thank you Joao, if I understand the DJT needs two resistors soldered to send telemetry signal to the 5th radio pin, while the XJT module has already the pin connected but I should probably flash it to non eu software... overall what do you suggest as a better option?

Paolo, I don't really know the X equipment. I use the D stuff since nearly the beginning (6 or 7 years) and I have never had a problem, nor did I read about big problems apart from a bad batch of anternnas on the DJT module.. Actually, not true, I remember now that I have read ONCE about a bad problem in all these years.. It was a module with a faulty 5 pin connector. Frsky then started using a better quality one.. My DJT still has the old connector but I have never had a problem.. So, I can really recommend the D series..
Unfortunately I cannot say that I only read good stuff about the new X stuff in just a couple years. For sure it is good, but I have decided to stay with what worked for me :)

I also have only D receivers and a DHT module on an old radio and never had a problem, I will continue with it so...
The only mod needed is to add two resistor inthe DJT module, I think the Turnigy should be already ok...

I think you only need one resistor.. You don't have to connect the wire to pin 2. Only pin5..

Hi paolo28maggio ,
The XJT, by moving the switches, it will change it into a DJT (PPM protocol) module.
Suggest getting the XJT which is better to have, as you will also be able to use X-Series and D-Series (with PXX protocol) receivers too.

The XJT supports 'D' mode, even with EU firmware on it. You just need to select "D8" mode in the menu to use it.

Re: 9XR-PRO and FrSky XJT module – Telemetry – Mod or not?

Post by zkr250v2 »

Hi all,

I've recently gotten into the hobby and have just completed my first drone after months of research. I purchased the following:

ZMR250v2 gold (couldn't find black)
LUXv2 Flight controller
ZTW 30a Bl_heliS ESC
X4R receiver
9XR-Pro w/XJT Module

I have yet to purchase the FPV gear as I want to get the basics of flying down first. I have been able to resolve all the issues I've encountered during my build but this one. I cannt figure out how to get telemetry to display on my radio. I have the smart port hooked up to to UART5 and have selected SmartPort as telemetry output as well as telemetry output on in the configuration tab. I've flashed the firmware on the 9XR-PRO to the latest version (ersky9x-r220). What configuration do I need on the radio to have telemetry?

Thanks
Kurt

On the protocol menu, have you set the protocol to "XJT" (recently renamed from "PXX"), instead of PPM?
If so, you should be seeing a RSSI value when the receiver is on. Do you see a RSSI value?

As you know, L9R has no built in telemetry.
You would be using an On-Screen-Data (OSD) video system for your telemetry needs.
The L9R receiver dose output the RSSI levels which you can feed to OSD and view it on a video system (FPV).
Note: RSSI output = analog voltage (0~3.3V).

There may be a way to use it , say an X8R for the telemetry and a L9R for the model controls.
My idea is with a radio like the Taranis (using erSky9x firmware) using internal and external XJT modules,
one bind to (say internal module) the L9R for the model controls and the external bind to the X8R for the telemetry data to the radio.
I have not tried it, but I think it may work.

The problem is that the X8R won't even get close to the distance he wants to fly with the L9R receiver. So, he will lose the telemetry at less than 2Km, or even 1.5Km..

Yes, will lose the telemetry first (with the X8R), but will have model control for longer with the L9R, which is why you would buy the L9R.
