9XR Pro battery issue

Post by LoafFPV »

Hi

I bought my 9XR Pro used recently, and have just been using it to fly simulator so far but I have a question about the battery.
I realized it drained the battery quite quick, included was the original 9xr pro lipo with safety circuit
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-9xr ... -pack.html

I balance charged it with my lipo charger and went on the simulator again.
After a while the radio just died on me without warning. (last I saw the battery voltage was around 11.1v)

I checked the cells on the battery and one was 3.0v while the other two were on 3.65v.
Could the radio drain just one cell? The connection to the radio is via the balance lead so I guess it could use one or more of the 3 cells?

Anyhow, I ordered a new lipo from hobbyking, but currently I am a bit dead in the water. My lipo didn't recognize the battery as a 3 cell anymore...

I think the battery is just dead.
LiPo batteries will last quite long if we treat them well.
Keep them always balanced, do not let any of the cells discharge under about 3.3V. 3.0V is the absolute minimum just before damage starts to happen. At this point the cell is basically empty :)
Always leave at least 20 to 30% charge in the battery. Do not drain it completely.
Do not overcharge the cells. Some chargers do and they could make them explode. It has happened before..

The radio uses the main voltage, not single cells. As I said, I think one of the cells of your radio's battery pack is dead.

If the radio uses the main voltage, then all is OK. The battery is probably damaged.
I managed to charge it slowly, but one cell drops much earlier then the others. I don't dare to use this much more now

New pack incoming so all good. :)

I had a similar problem with the "official" protected battery where one cell would drain much quicker than the others.
Switched to a normal 3S 2200mah lipo now and have a tx voltage warning set up so no problems with suddenly losing power any more.
Protection circuit sounds great on paper but I'd rather risk a battery getting damaged than the transmitter switching off on me and losing a plane and other collateral damage depending on what it lands on!

Current Kit:-
Taranis X9D plus running ErSkyTx - main radio.
Turnigy 9XR-Pro with internal FrSky DHT Module - used on the simulator.
Retired radios:-
Turnigy i10 with FlySky receivers.
Turnigy I6 - My first Tx now just used on Quads.
