Intermittent speaker malfunctions

Post by rsilk49 »

I don't know if it is the cold weather, but my speaker often stops after about 10 minutes. If I power it off and on again then it usually starts working for a few more minutes! This is a pain because I have several voice alerts I rely on. Could it be a low voltage issue?
Anyone else had this and found a solution?

Never had that problem.. Try replacing the speaker itself.

Freeze spray on the speaker or driver ic would track it down?
Speaker substitution is the first simplest option.

I wouldn't use freeze spray on a speaker as it is normally made of paper.. it shouldn't get hot anyway..

The wire is wrapped around the cone. Where it’s soldered to the speaker wire terminals I should have said.
Using a ohm meter on the speaker and gently pushing the cone to move it could show up a broken wire.
I agree that the speaker would be the last place to look but it happens.

I believe the speaker should be the first place to look.
I know I said this never happened to me but now I do remember something similar did. And twice. And in Both occasions it was a broken speaker.

Good question. I will try that on the next flight.

Good point.. I have just realized that the radio is a 9XR-PRO.. Actually half of the output stage of my radio's audio amplifier broke, and I had to change the circuit in order to still have sound on the speaker. I don't remember what I did though :( It was quite a while ago..
But even if this is the case on your radio, and the audio chip is broken, you could still have the the headphones working, and they use only one of the output pins..
The best is really to replace the speaker and see if the problem goes away. if not, then we can search somewhere else..

Today, indoors, the speaker failed. I plugged in the headphones but still no sound except for a background hum at high volume setting.
Switched off and on again and now sound works through speaker/headphones . . .

Your speaker does not seem to be the culprit. If you hear some hum and not a lot, your wiring is presumably good too.

Your radio failed indoor, so cold should not be the problem.

Probably not the issue, but what software are you running? Sometimes, weird things disappear with a simple software update.

Last, before tinkering with the amp and/or volume chip, try to replace your SD card and use a reputedly good one.

Beeps (e.g. on key presses), are sent directly, while the voice output needs the SD card working. Both are generated by the same task.
It is therefore useful to know if all sounds stopped or if the beeps are OK but the voice is not.

Beeps stopped when voice stopped (using speaker) during flight today.

If (when) it stops, please go to the STAT2 display and check the "Voice Underruns" value. This should be 0. A non-zero value indicates data for the voice output wasn't read from the SD card in time.
Also, on the SD Card Stat display, what is the number on the second line at the extreme right. This is the cluster size you have on the SD card. We eould like to see 32 here.

All values as expected.
Today I was getting no sound at all after switching on the radio. My suspicion has turned to the original SD card which I have replaced with a name brand (Toshiba 16gb).
On the PC, I successfully copied all the folders to the new card and currently have sound again.
Time will tell if that is the cure . . .

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem for a short time.
For me sometimes the problem is as follows:
The countdown expires, 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... then two beeps. After that is silence.
Only a reboot can fix the problem.
Now I've turned off the countdown and the minute beep in the General Settings. The options I have activated in the individual model timers.
That seems to work now.
I think the "beep" is the problem?
Did the replacement of the SD card solve the problem?
