Questions about RSSI

Post by iFeghali »

R221, menu protocol option “range test” gives me a number for RSSI. When close to RX (one or two feet away) I get a value of 90 but when too close (a couple inches) RSSI drops immediately to ZERO. Is this normal ?

I know my critical alert is set to 42. Is a value of 90 when one feet away from RX good ?

Thanks

That is normal. The range check reduces the power to simulate a long distance.
Move the radio 30 metres away with the model about 1 metre above the ground Check the RSSI value, a safe reading would be 45+.

He is asking if it is normal the RSSI dropping to zero when the RX and Radio are too close..

That should be normal as the RX is probably being swamped.. Signal is too strong.
I have never seen it happening in range test mode though. :)

Got a 64 in plain sight and 45 behind a wall. Guess it’s good then.

I can reproduce it consistently both in test range mode and normal operation mode.

What matters for a range test ito see where you do (or don't) lose control. RSSI is extra information but not the important thing to look at.

A range test done by just going behind a wall is not a proper range test. :)
You need to place your model about a meter or so above ground, and far from metal stuff. Then put your radio in range test mode and walk on a straight line and without obstacles between you and the model. See how far you walk before your model stops responding, or have intermittent control. You should get at least 50 meters. With my Frsky DJT module and a D8R-ll Plus receiver I get about 90 meters.
Try also with the radio antenna vertical and horizontal, but never pointing at the model.
