Need to fix Blank Screen on Turnigy 9X Transmitter

Post by bob195558 » Wed Dec 19, 2012 3:38 am

Subject: Need to fix Blank Screen on Turnigy 9X Transmitter.
On my Hobby King Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio, I was trying to Read and Save a copy of the Original Turnigy 9X V2 firmware, using the firmware installing program: eXetreme Burner-AVR v1.2 (and tried eepe -Revision 360 also). I had connection and communication between the program eXetreme Burner and my on Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio. When I selected the Read All button, a message came up say the chip was incorrect with an option to continue. I selected to continue and a second message came up saying it was not able to Read the firmware. I then pressed other buttons in an effort to discover a way to read and save a copy of my Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio and I may have inadvertently changed something because the LCD Screen went blank at some point. I did not press any of the writing buttons, but when the screen went blank, I felt some great concern that my Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio had broken. There was no visual activity with the eXetreme Burner program so I closed it and disconnected the USB cable. I then checked the battery voltage for the radio and it was good.
In my searching for information about my LCD screen going blank when it connected to the eXetreme Burner program one place talked a little about some setting being change would cause the Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio LCD Screen to go blank. And some other place said that when writing to the Radio the LCD Screen may go blank for part of the writing process.
So this information maybe encouraging but I need more information about the eXetreme Burner program's functions.

No idea about extreme burner. Why not use eePe or companion9x?

You probably reconfigured the 9X's "fuses" while attempting various things, which can require hardware fiddling to revive. Install eePe or companion9x and use the command to reset the fuses to factory default, see if that works.

And NEVER use the continue/force option if something's not right, as the results are unpredictable. You need to fix whatever is not working right instead.

To clear a thing up.
The LCD screen will go blank during programming. The main processor gets reset by the programmer and so the processor no longer sends data to the LCD.

Re:Where is there a Manual for eepe and/or companion9x softw

Post by bob195558 » Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:54 am

Where is there a Manual for eepe and/or companion9x software?

I need to understand all about what resetting the fuses back to factory default using eepe or companion9x software is?
I may be in this problem because I am ignorant about these programs, eepe and companion9x software, so
I need to understand what they are about, what they do before I try fixing my Turnigy 9x Radio?

What is the different between, Reset Fuses EEPROM - DELETE and Reset Fuses EEPROM - PROTECT?

How do I Reset the fuses back to factory default?

I need to know what the Fuses: Read Fuses is about and the meaning of the options and what ...... Fuses .... is all about?
Is it part of the Programming Language and if so I need to know what it means?
I am new to re-flashing Turnigy 9x Radios and I need to understand what the buttons and options do with the eepe and/or Companion9x program?
I would like information about how and what the eepe or companion9x programs ...... and how they works so I can be able to understand how to use them?
How do we set the fuses back to factory default?

Fuses: Read Fuses

Reset Fuses EEPROM - DELETE .....?

Reset Fuses EEPROM - PROTECT .....?

I have a lot of questions that I need to understand about these eepe or companion9x programs?
I am having a lot of difficulty finding the information I need about these programs eepe or companion9x?

Fuses define basic operating parameters for the processor, like where to get its clock source from.

Read fuses: read current fuse settings. Try that first to check the connection is OK before going further. You can post the output (values for Low, High and Extended) here so we can see if anything is wrong.

Reset fuses - erase (default for open9x): When flashing a new firmware, eeprom (settings memors) is erased too. Use companion9x to save/restore.
Reset fuses - protect (default for er9x): When flashing a new firmware, settings are kept.

I am getting an Error message when trying to connect Companion9x computer program, through miniUSB cable to Smartieparts.com 9x Solderless Programmer Board in my Turnigy 9x Radio:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
avrdude.exe: error: could not find USB device "USBasp" with vid=0x16c0 pid=0x5dc
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AVRDUDE done - exit code 1
--------------------------------------------

So I think I may have Killed,......... my Main Board in my new Turnigy9x Radio when I exited the Companion9x computer program when I saw the Turnigy 9x v2 Radio Screen go blank as it was reading the radio's Main Board chips information.
I am a newbe person to the Hobby, and so I think I have leaned the hard way.
But I learn this lesson well not to interrupt the connection when reading and writing between Companion9x and Turnigy9x Radio.
If some one thinks the Main Board maybe fixable, please let me know.

could not find USB device normally means that you have a driver problem.
If you have the new Smartyparts board, you must power on your radio.

This has nothing to do with the mainboard, it indicates no connection between the computer and programmer (smartieparts board). Have you installed the drivers properly?

With my Second Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio problem of no screen when power is turned on, I would say the same thing and maybe there could be a problem with the new SmartieParts 9x Solderless Programmer Board that I just installed into it.
But I have another Radio I call my First Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio with er9x already in it and I have the same hardware in both radios and my First Radio works OK. There is NO USB driver problem with my first Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio. The problems with my Second Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio are the same as when I lost the screen. I may have killed something in the radio when I closed the companion9x program when I saw the screen went blank. I am new to this and did not know that the screen will go blank when reading the radio information and interrupting the connection when reading and/or writing to the radio will break the main board.
So because the USB works with other radios with SmartieParts 9x Solderless Programmer Board in them I think its not a USB driver problem.
I do not know much about flashing programmable chips.
But could it be that the chip is locked and so not allowing access to it?

It's improbable even though not impossible, that you destroyed something when you interrupted the connection.

When you tested:
Did you use the same USB cable with both radios? (sometimes USB cables are defective)

Did you power your radio from battery or from USB? (the new Smartyparts board must be powered from the radio, so switch it on, if you have the new board version)

Does Windows (I assume you are using Windows) hardware manager recognize the radio (exactly the programmer of the Smartyparts board) as soon as the USB cable has been connected ?

Just thinking?
Maybe the SP programmer is in trouble?
I wouldn't risk destroying a working setup to test one that's not however.
The first option is to try again all the ideas posted to help.
One option is to send your programmer back for testing.
Another is to see if anyone here is in your area that can help you out,
Another is to solder in a HK $5 programmer that works 100% all the time to isolate what's going on. Other types are on eBay but not one issue with the HK one I always use. Then it could be removed and the SP restored.
Not great fast answers but maybe one will help.
Finally would be to have someone else give it a try for you.
I repaired several last year sent to me but got "stiffed" on the return postage, some even on $8 for a new AT64 replacement so I'm not ready to volunteer yet this mew year.
A new board can't hurt if someone has a spare but do you know you can trust the programmer now?

Hi Reinhard (ReSt),

Yes, the same miniUSB cable was use with both Radios.
My understanding,...... Unless the info for the newest SmartieParts 9x Solderless Programmer Board (Rev 2.3: White board) was not updated yet,....... indicated that both the USB and Radio battery power needs to be on at the same time,
(http://www.smartieparts.com/shop/index. ... =page&id=9 Installation Instructions).
What is happening with the Second Radio's problem is when the power switch is ON, there seems to be no power to the radio and maybe that is why the USB is not being connected.
I will test this out right now: I have my First Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio with the power switch in the OFF position and have connected the miniUSB cable to and to the companion9x program and the USB has made connection.
And when I clicked the button: Read EEPROM From Tx this error message came up:
=============================================================================
Started AVRDUDE
C:/Program Files (x86)/companion9x/avrdude.exe -c usbasp -p m64 -P usb -U eeprom:r:C:/Users/ASUS-W~1/AppData/Local/Temp/temp.hex:i
=============================================================================
avrdude.exe: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 1
avrdude.exe: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check. avrdude.exe done. Thank you.
=============================================================================
AVRDUDE done - exit code 1
==================================================================
It is not able to read the Tx information and when I switch ON the power button to the radio, then it is able to read the Tx information. the error massage is no more with my First Turnigy9X Radio.
Must be something with my Second Turnigy9x radio Main board that is blocking and/or changing something to cause the USB not to connect to the companion9x program.

And Yes, to the last question you had, when I connect the USB cable to my First Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio with the power switch in the ON position, the USB connects right away.
So I am not sure why my Second Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio problem is not working.
Best regards,
Robert

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Kilrah,

Yes, when I connect the USB to my First Turnigy 9X Transmitter Radio with the power switch in the ON position, the USB is connecting correctly. The USB drivers are working OK with my first radio. Both Turnigy9X Radio's have the same hardware and use the same USB cable. But with my Second Turnigy9x Radio the USB is not making connection.
I am not sure why my Second Turnigy9X Transmitter Radio with the blank screen problem is not working.
Best regards,
Robert

Hi ShowMaster,
I have tried some more stuff in my reply to Reinhard (ReSt) 9x Forum.
I am looking at purchasing the newest SKY9x Rev 3.0 Replacement 9x Board.
It seems to be a good option to do.
But I would like to fix the Main Board in my Second Turnigy9x Radio, if it can be done. I could still ship it back to Hobby King, it's still under warranty, but all they would do is give me item credit and I would have all the shipping cost and no radio.
I am thinking,............ it may be better to advance more toward upgrading the radio then trying to recover a few dollars. About half the cost of the radio is shipping and shipping it back will make it more then half of the cost.
That's just the way it is with shipping cost all the way from HobbyKing. Also there is a long wait in time too. I did not know at the time that it was better to purchase the FlySky version here in the USA, also free shipping if order is $100 or more.
Best regards,
Robert

The sky board is a great upgrade!
Is more radio than you can probably use for awhile and that's a good thing!
Somehow you need to rule out a SP board issue before working on the 9x board.
After that the 9x board can be fixed or replaced. I'm not sure what the current going price for a clean stock 9x board is these days. Once that's figured out a board or a fix may be a reality!
A lot of great people here that may help you out.
Let's see what turns up first and go from there. Maybe it's as simple as a replacement SP board?
If it's not the board then a good price on a stock working 9x board.
With so many converting to sky boards there has to be some 9x boards available!
Personally I would look into investing your money into the sky board and selling your 9x board and SP board as is.
I have 2 versions of the sky boards and maybe soon a third. It does so much with no soldering, and it talks!
Let's see where this goes. I've had my faith restored today when I checked my Paypal account so I may be open to looking at your board late on. Usually it's parts cost, shipping back, and $2 for my favorite Charles Shawn CAB wine.

Your problem is with the programmer.
USB connection is completely independent of the radio. If you take the SP board out of the radio and connect USB, you should have the "connecting" sound, and attempting to read with eePe should find the programmer but no target ("avrdude.exe: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer").

So your main board is probably fine, but the chip just in an erased state with no program on it. I would return the programmer, and either use the programmer from the working radio to reflash the second, or take the safe approach SM suggests and simply wait until you receive the fixed programmer.

Hi Kilrah and ShowMaster, and every one else also,

I like Kilrah thinking that my Second Turnigy9x Radio Main Board chip is not damage, but maybe in an Erased State. I did order and have the HK USBasp AVR Programming Device and I think I would like to try restoring the second Turnigy9x Main Board chip firmware programing.
I can find the information of how to solder the wires to the Main Board chip and I will try to find the connector plug that other people are also using with it.
If someone knows where I could find the information for how to restore an erased and/or blank Turnigy 9x Radio Main Board chip, I would appreciate it.

Just to review some of the things that I have tried.
When I first purchased the SmartieParts Board and used it first to fix the EEPROM ERROR! in my First Turnigy9x Radio and it is now working very well. I had ordered more SmartieParts Boards for the other Turnigy 9x Radio's and while I was waiting, I remove the SmartieParts Board from my First Turnigy 9x Radio and installed it into my Second Turnigy 9x Radio. It connected properly to the USB cable, to start with.
Well to make a long story shorter, I interrupted the connection between the companion9x program and the Turnigy9x Radio when the radio screen went blank. And when the other SmartieParts Board's came in, I installed the first SmartieParts Board back into my first Turnigy 9x Radio and it is still working correctly.
I then installed a brand-new SmartieParts Board into my second Turnigy9x Radio that still has the blank screen problem. I have not checked out this brand-new SmartieParts Board to that it could have a problem with in it. But I can say that the same failed symptoms are the same as when the first SmartieParts Board was installed in it.
Maybe if the Main Board chip is in an Erased State, it could cause a problem with the failing of the USB connection between the SmartieParts Board's USB connection and the computer and/or companion9x program.
So when I heard the suggestion of the HK USBasp AVR Programming Device may be able to make the USB connection with the Main Board chip and with the possibility of restoring the Main Board chip back to its working order.
This gives me hope toward a solution.

I have received and wired up my Failed Turnigy9x Radio Main Board to the Hobby-King USBASP. To review: After the Turnigy9x Radio Main Board Failed and the Smarties Parts 9x Solderless Programmer Board would not connect through the USB connection. I removed the Smarties Parts 9x Solderless Programmer Board and as it was suggested to use the Hobby-King USBASP board and to that it would be able to make the USB connection so to be able to restore the Turnigy9x Radio Main Board Chip back to working order.

Using the eepe ER9x EEPROM Editor program I tried the
Reset Fuses to Factory default and the massage that came up was:
Started AVRDUDE
C:/Program Files (x86)/eePe/avrdude.exe -c usbasp -p m64 -P usb -u -U lfuse:w:0x0E:m -U hfuse:w:0x89:m -U efuse:w:0xFF:m
avrdude.exe: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for usbasp firmware update.
avrdude.exe: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 1
avrdude.exe: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override this check.
avrdude.exe done. Thank you.
AVRDUDE done - exit code 1

I also tried the Set Fuses to Protect EEprom and Read Memory from TX and all three gave the same message.

What do I need to do to restore the Turnigy9x Radio Main Board Chip back to working order?

Well until someone who was helping earlier comes along I will post my 2 cents :)

looks like avrdude sees your programmer now. that is good.
you can ignore the warnging about 'cannot set sck period' . That happens with most chinese usbasp's as they use custom firmware which automatically controls the speed. I dont like that, but in theory it should slow down until it works.

The bad news is that the programmer does not see the microcontroller on the 9x.
I agree with the other posts that you got off track when 'a message came up say the chip was incorrect with an option to continue. I selected to continue' .

I would double check my solder connections to the board. If you have a scope you can see if the crystal is running on the MCU. IF the fuses got reset to the default 1mhz speed then there is an option to really slow down avrdude . Not sure if it will work with the programmer that you have. I'll let someone else comment on that.

I hope this helps. At least your computer is seeing your programmer now

Hello, I have a problem with the screen..

I was using my 9x with er9x and while I'm setting up a model the screen just goes blank.
I put the radio into bootloader mode and I was able to flash /read the flash and eeprom.
IS the screen defect? or what can it be? I have no idea.
Please help me.
