Please help with 9x flashing!

Post by edk83 »

So i bought a 9x, its great.

I also bought a backlight and usbasp from Hobbyking

Backlight fitted all good. Got 2 usbasp's one works, one just says usb device not recognised and doesn t light up

Anyway I used the ribbon cable that came with it, cut the 6 pin block off and I using the red striped wire as pin 1.

I have soldered all wires in place and triple checked. The radio powers up when connected to the laptop and beeps as it should.

But the usbasp will not talk to the radio, I cannot read or write just get target doesnt answer!

Tried with the lipo and the radio powered up = same, the radio screen goes blank for a second then the same error comes up

Tried setting the port to nothing and the string to slow things down but still no joy.

I'm thinking there is still a bad solder joint somewhere but could it be anyting else before I take all the wires off and start again?

Do you get the error from the usbasp that it cannot set sck period? Maybe you could take a picture of your wiring, many mistakes have been found by using a different set of eyes than your own. Another thing that causes people trouble when flashing is the capacitor on the reset line. With the radio open and looking at the processor, antenna end facing away from you. It is near the bottom right corner of the m64. It is usually black or orange in color. You could try removing that and see if it helps.

Also my tx is only showing 4.6v when powered from the usbasp, have tried it with and without the tx powered from the battery. Tried disconnecting the new backlight - still 4.6.

I think from your photos you have a rev 1 board, not a rev 2. The solder pad on pin 8 from the left is wrong. Tou want pin 11 from the left for that wire. Just scrape some green off of the trace on pin 11 anywhere and pre tin it and move your wire over to the right 3 pins.

Thanks to SP this should explain it.

Looks like you might be onto something there! I knew the pad was in a different place on some boards but for some reason didnt check it! Ill probably try and solder to the resistor on the track next to it.

See I knew another set of eyes would help. That is definitely a rev1 board. On mine I soldered the wire to the top of the resistor instead of scraping a trace off. If you are still having problems after moving the wire then try removing the part marked J476 over on the right. That is the capacitor I was talking about. What it does is slow down the changes on the reset line. Those need to happen in a specific amount of time for programming to work correctly.

Boom and its running er9x :)

That has only taken me about 5 hours lol

That little resistor is hard to get at after a couple of beers, not really done any proper soldering before, its not neat but it works.

You'd better not drink and solder, this will turn out bad someday...

A tip.
Buy a hot glue gun from $.99 store and use some drops of glue to hold the wires in place where ever any strain will rip off the solder pad or connection. I use a BBQ Skewer for everything and the point is a great probe or glue dabber. The glue can also insolate bare wires. Tape after some time will get very sticky and you could regret you used it if you want to remove it. Good for short time uses while your building you system.
I actually found some glue sticks at a craft store that dry very clear and you can see everything through the glue for easy reading.
I'm glad your fix was that easy.

Yeah thanks for that

I normally use epoxy type glue. At this stage I only wanted to get er9x working, might make a proper connector later on.

hot glue is still possible to remove if necessary. Epoxy is not...

My mods to er9x and Frsky telemetry, part 1.
Just the redirecting of pins 3 &4 and BL & haptic wires added to the M64 and USBasp programmer.
Isolating MISO & MOSI, no added resistors.
