Is the 5V directly to the CPU really needed?

Post by algo »

I use a parallel port (dapa) for programming and because of that I have to use a whole separate circuit to supply the 5V to power everything when using the hookup method normally used when USB programming (ie. 5V directly to the CPU). I would rather not have that 5V stuff. Would it work just turn on the radio (possibly via the trainer port to disable the TX) then program normally?

I know in theory it should work (with a shared ground) but I'm unsure if there is some issue I don't know about.

No problem flashing using the radio's power supply.

Works great. Thanks!

I guess eventually I'll get around to putting in a USB interface but I already had the parallel interface from my other AVR work.

I built a USB header board similar to the Smartieparts except I put the direct ISP interface on it instead of USB, that way I can run it using my dapa cable. Shouldn't be difficult to switch to USB if I get a FTDI chip or something.

I don't know why I made so many of them...
