Standard Glider Templates

Post by Rob Thomson »

The attached mix is an example for setting up both a V-Tail & T-Tail glider on the Taranis platform.

A few things have been assumed.

CH01 - ELEVATOR
CH02 - RUDDER
CH03 - AIL
CH04 - AIL
CH05 - FLAP
CH06 - FLAP

SWITCH [SB] - flight phase selection (FLY|ACRO|LAND)
SLIDER [RS] - camber control
SWITCH [SG] vario control (off | read out height if dif greater than 1m | beep + read out height)

When in FLY mode, outer ailerons work, and rudder is auto coupled.
When in ACRO mode, flaps and ailerons are coupled, Snap Flap is enabled, Rudder is independent.
When in Landing Mode, Crow is on the throttle stick. Rudder is independent.

This is a relatively simple glider setup that would serve as a good start for many sport models.

Hope it helps.

There are compensated v-tail mixes listed in the forum that you could add to your model setup, and simple v-tail mix is EASY. Just mix both elevator and rudder into both v-tail channels. 70% would be a good place to start, but mix ratios can be adjusted as necessary.

That is the compensated v-tail. You would need to adjust the one high channel mix to make it work.

Also you may need to tweak the server directions!

Hello Rob,

do have any suggestion to add a motor in case of a motor glider?

What´s to do in Landing mode (THrottle stick...)?

Will test your template on MPX Cularis;)

Thanks

Just add throttle to another channel on the same mix.

I am away for a week - will try remember to supply one when back.

Rob,

Great standard template for Glider!

Just one other comment do you have your description of the Rudder & Elevator channels round the wrong way?

Hi,

Is the right slider RS meant to move the cambers positively (Speed) or negatively (thermal). I try to figure out what it is used for to find the neutral positions in order to adjust the mechanics.

Rob, after your absence, could you please shortly explain the different mixer lines, especially the freaky ones like ch10 and ch11 and the GVar Offsets as I really want to understand the whole deepth of opentx;)

Regards

I normally only introduce camber for slowing down. So flaps down.

Actually have already updated the system now yo just use a 3 pos switch. Fast, neutral, float.

Really up go you :)

Rob,

opening your file with the last Companion release available (1.42 rev 2180), I get strange Offset values for Aileron mixer in both models.
Which release did you use to create the file ?

Ok, I see on Gcode that Linux releases are already available, alas I have to wait the 1.43 W$ build.

Romolo,
just upgraded Companion to 1.43, but, after loading a fresh copy of Rob eepe file, I still get a strange value in "Ail L" channel offsets: -509% instead of GV1.
I am running Companion on WinXP SP3.

Of course, what sounds strange to me is that one only offset value stays wrong.

Yep. it looks like there are two or more errors in mixer. -509% instead of -gv4 or -gv1, (whatever is supposed to be in here) in channel ch04 and ch03. Offset jumps from one number to the other when edited in companion9x. Also has ??? instead of rud in ch11.
It changes Just playing around with it in companion9x unless you remember to turn on gvars in preferences. So turn on gvars to get mix to work and then re-edit the mix.

All depends on your servos and which way round you have installed them.

So maybe.. maybe not :)

Hello
I've just loaded this on and put it on a model.

The problem I have is my flap installation uses the full range of the servo. So the mid point of the flaps is at around 75% of the servo throw.

It's a molded glider (mini vector) so the servos are glued in and permanent and are not adjustable ( such is the way).

If was to offset the servo using a JR set,I would use "flap offset" to sort this out, including all the other flight modes.

What do I do here?
I tried using all the sub trim on the servo menu and it sort of works, other than when in Acro mode the flaps move down all the way.

Could some one talk me through how to achieve flap offset?

Could you be a bit more specific?
I guessed it would all be in the mixer menu.

Ok, sorry, what I meant to say is, use a curve not the offset. I got confused, maybe because you said "Flap Offset" :)

Try something like this:

Program a 3 point curve

c1 -100, 75, 100 (adjust to your needs.This is just a general example)

Then in the mixer:

Ch06 100% 3POS curve (c1)

You could also program some slow:

Ch06 100% 3POS Curve (c1) Slow (up 3.0 / down 3.0)

or use the sub-trim as you already found out.

Another example:

Ch07 -100% MAX
R 75% MAX Switch (ID1)
R 100% MAX Switch (ID2)

* "R" means it is a Replace mix.

Of course, you can also use a Pot to adjust your flaps..

Ch5 100% P1

Adjust the end points by adjusting the limits..

I hope it helps

There are two distinct parts to setting up flaps on a sailplane:
  1. Servo calibration (i.e. setting the end points and balancing the two flaps)
  2. Applying an offset to achieve the correct neutral.
The first is done in the Servos tab, the second in the Mixers tab.
All is explained here.

If I where you - get to grips with Mikes f3f setup.

It may feel like overkill. But it is really well put together. Just dont use the features you dont want :)
