Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
If you want the encoder to protrude slightly from the front of the radio, shave just a little off the ends of the mounting posts (the ones for the original button frame) on the front half of the radio before installation. Should work the same with either the hard or soft-wired approach.

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
Well, there's 16 pins between the two PCBs, and 4 more for the encoder/select button, totaling 20 wires if it were connected exactly the same as the hard-soldered method. Looking at your pics earlier, I saw at least one wire that served no purpose - leading to an empty section of ground plane.

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
More likely, you have one or more misconnected wires. Find a copy of the datasheet for the encoder and look at the electrical connections. If you join the common connections (assuming that will work on the sky9x board), you will only need 8 wires: 4 directions, 2 encoder, 1 select, 1 ground.

That'll do. On the pic I marked up above, the top and left (with respect to the image) jumpers are needed.SkyNorth wrote:This is the electrical connections to the menu keys for ersky board rev B

They provide mechanical support, and in the case of the pin pairs that need jumpers (for the sky9X board), they are also electrical connections.kaos wrote:are those 4 pins needed at all?

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
Ah, yes. The top two legs and the bottom two legs of each stock tactile switch are electrically bridged together. Soldering a jumper wire between each of the corresponding pin pairs would be the surest way to get it right. In the interest of moders' sanity, it should only be neccessary to bridge the...

For those interested in the directional button replacement, I shot some video of PCB prep and installation. I haven't gotten around to any real editing yet, so it's an hour and 10 minutes - no audio, so put on your favorite music album and/or skip around. It's HD, so if you're having a hard time see...

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
can you explain further? The stock buttons have 4 leads - one at each corner. These leads are connected together internally in two pairs, with the switch contacts between the pairs. The stock 9X board has traces that mirror these internal connections - they're redundant really. Since the stock boar...

I worry about the stress that will put on the boards. Maybe a dremel with the largest cut-off wheel you can find? The quick-release wheels are bigger than the usual screw-on ones.Crucial wrote:I think I am going to have to try and get a hacksaw blade in between the 2 boards.

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
That was my first suspicion. IIRC, the pads for the encoder should go up (away from the rounded corners of the main PCB) and toward the middle. Flipping it around 180 doesn't work because the directional buttons share a common terminal - you end up with all the button I/O lines tied together.

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
Removing the pushbuttons tends to be easier and have better results if you commit yourself to destroying them (rather than keep them in reusable condition) before you actually start. That is, clip each button's legs between the PCB and button body, then remove the body. From there you can work on re...

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
I found that I didn't like the depth of the encoder so I added a 1.32 plywood spacer in between the encoder and the circuit board. Alternatively, you can carefully cut the tabs off the board (it may be necessary to slightly notch into the main circle of the PCB) so it clears the screw posts on the ...

Re: Sky9x Rotaty Encoder Option
The inclusion of a rotary encoder should make "virtual" input channels fairly easy. That is, input value(s) that aren't ADC conversions, but rather a simple counter in code, similar to a trim value. The value would be incremented or decremented with the rotary encoder, and the user could s...

I'm gathering its a matter of having a 3-pin header and traces going to 3 of the unused gpio? 4-pin header: 3 GPIO and ground. Pull-up resistors on the GPIO lines (10K should do, or just use uC internal pull-ups). Some kind of de-bounce circuit wouldn't hurt but probably isn't entirely necessary - ...

Ideas? Fill the space with hot glue? ^_^ Liberal application of flux will let the solder run up through the holes on the '9X board (they're through-plated) and cover the pad on the front side, providing support. I kind of doubt it's necessary though. There's 16 posts and the adapter PCB to keep eve...
